MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 0 SOUTHAM UNITED
Scorer: Pete Hall.

Coleshill did little to warm up the watching support as they struggled to beat bottom team Southam United. On a bitterly cold and winding afternoon, Town came no where near their recent performances but instead sunk to the level of a very poor visiting team. Pete Hall continued his recent scoring spree with the only goal just after the hour mark, but that apart, neither side created many chances of note. Frank Woodburn was still away on holiday and Ashley Downer went down with an injury just hours before kick off. Danny Nixon came in on the right of midfield.

In a scrappy opening Steve Lees had the first pot at goal but his shot went way wide. Chris Davies came a little closer with his effort then Southam had a header just wide. A clever Davies drag back allowed Pete Hall space in the box but the keeper was out quick to save at the attackers feet. Then on 30 minutes Coleshill were denied a penalty when Hall clearly had his legs taken away from him but the Referee showed no interest. Danny Nixon found himself free with a one on one with the keeper but the youngster never looked in control and his goal attempt went way wide. If the first half had been fairly even Coleshill took the upper hand early in the second half. Hall wriggled free in the box and his shot looked to have gone under the keeper heading for the net but the visitors stopper somehow got something on the ball and cleared for a corner. Nixon?s deep cross had the keeper flapping but he did enough to relieve the pressure. In the best move of the game Nixon fed Kevin Wagstaff wide on the left. The little winger skipped past a defender and let fly but the Southam keeper, at full stretch, just tipped the ball over the bar. Just after the hour mark, Coleshill finally got the all important goal but after all the huffing and puffing, the goal was a simple affair. Wagstaff floated in a corner to the near post and Pete Hall, unmarked, nonchalantly headed home, his feet never leaving the ground. Southam did up the work rate in an effort to get back into the game but the nearest the came was a speculative, wind assisted effort that Craig Jones did well to scramble backward and tip away. Southam pushed men forward but were incapable of converting the half chances that came their way. Coleshill?s best efforts came late in the game, both falling to full back Chris Gee. Firstly he shot just over when well placed 20 yards out, then he jinked into the box as the defence backed off but saw his goalbound effort well saved.

Coleshill moved one place up the table with these three points and put to bed any lingering thoughts of relegation. The season?s target of 35 points is now well achievable with still nine games to go.

Team;- Craig Jones, Steve Lees, Simon Bradbury, Derek Wilkes, Chris Gee, Danny Nixon (Adrian Walker), Carl Smith (Jamie Cartwright), Chris Davies, Mitchell Thompson (Lee Dempster), Pete Hall, Kevin Wagstaff.
