Nuneaton Griff 2 v 2 Coleshill Town

MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 17th April 2004
NUNEATON GRIFF 2 v 2 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorers: Craig Davies, Kevin Wagstaff.

End of season, not much to play for, both sides under strength but surprisingly a very entertaining game between two committed teams who worked hard throughout and gave their best. If Coleshill had shown the same commitment against the champions elect Romulus, then last week's result would have been much closer. James Butterworth after impressing for the youth team and again as substitute against Romulus kept his place in the starting line up, Dean Farrington and Gary Falconbridge also came in for rare starts.

Coleshill got off to the perfect start when, with the wind at their backs Kevin Wagstaff shot low from the edge of the box and as the ball bobbled the home keeper dove under the effort to give Town the lead. On 15 minutes it was two as prolific scorer Craig Davies cleverly drew the keeper before rounding him and shooting into an empty net. It was all Coleshill at this point with Town keeper Craig Jones just a spectator but as the half time approached Griff launched an attack down their left. With Butterworth beaten Chris Gee came across to cover and took out his man. Griff's leading scorer Matt Dyer took the kick from the left edge of the box and his fine effort gave Jones no chance as it sailed into the far top corner.

Coleshill came out fighting in the second half and in the first fifteen minutes Hall, Thompson and Davies all had chances to put the visitors further ahead. Nuneaton slowly worked their way back into the game without ever looking dangerous but Town's missed opportunities were to prove costly as Griff leveled on 81 minutes. Again it came from a free kick and again it was Dyer that took it but this time it was more central and this time the striker hit it with more power and the swerving effort eluded Jones for the equalizer.

This was a much better performance for Town with everyone working hard for each other. The defence looked solid with Steve Lees in particular playing a commanding and mature role. 3-5-2 seemed to suit Coleshill better as they looked more organized all over the park.

Team:- Craig Jones, James Butterworth, Steve Lees, Chris Gee, Dean Farrington, Carl Smith, Gary Falconbridge, Craig Davies, Pete Hall (Jason Noonan), Mitchell Thompson, Kevin Wagstaff. Subs not used Jamie Cartwright, Danny Nixon.
