MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
TUESDAY 26th April 2004
FECKENHAM 2 v 1 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Danny Carter.
Last game of the season and a chance for some of the successful youth team to have a run out for the first's. James Butterworth had played the last couple of games but Scott Wilson and Danny Carter came in for only their third appearances and James Lloyd made his debut in the unfamiliar role of left wingback. Feckenham had nothing to play for in the league but were looking forward to two cup finals so they fielded their strongest team, a tall and experienced side.
Coleshill made all the running in the opening fifteen minutes, enjoying the better of the possession and chances. Mitch Thompson forced a corner and Scott Wilson rose above the keeper to head for goal but the effort was cleared off the line. Kevin Wagstaff looking much more influential in the center midfield role, released Danny Nixon whose shot was saved at the foot of the post by the home keeper. Feckenham's Mark Powell had the first of the home team's best chances on twenty minutes but Craig Jones made a fine save. Gary Falconbridge, Carl Smith and Wagstaff combined for the latter to free Nixon with a backheel, and the midfielder forced the keeper to save with his feet. Feckenham slowly came into the game and a cross from the left should have brought some reward as it flew across the 6 yard box with no-one getting a touch. James Butterworth cleared a Powell header off the line and at the other end a Wilson header went just wide. From a long Jones punt, Danny Carter flicked over a defender to find Wagstaff whose shot from 20 yards went just wide. Carter had no chance against the big defenders with the ball in the air but when with it at his feet he was causing all kinds of problems. With half time approaching Feckenham took the lead with a disputed goal that their play had hardly deserved. Powell was all over his marker as he headed down a deep cross from the left. Butterworth tried to clear off the line but the Ass Referee signaled, not for the expected free kick but for a goal.
The second half started in the same manner with Coleshill on top but the home team, and Powell in particular always dangerous. Butterworth recovered from a mistake just in time to intercept another Powell effort, then Thompson and Wagstaff combined to free Danny Carter who took his time, picked his spot but saw his effort just go over the angle of bar and post. Carter was soon back as he was released by Thompson with a free run at goal, his shot was parried by the keeper but came straight back for the young striker to tap into an empty net for the equalizer on 54 minutes. Coleshill pushed for a second. The keeper flapped at a Thompson header, a Buterworth was headed off the line and a Carter header went just wide from a corner. James Lloyd, who came more into the game after a quiet start, could have made a name for himself but a dangerous cross just eluded his outstretched leg. A second howler by the Referee cost Coleshill dear as he allowed the home team double advantage. An obvious foul by Coleshill was waved play on with Feckenham in possession. The move ended up with a shot at goal that Jones saved with ease but the Ref pulled play back for the earlier foul and with Coleshill disputing the decision Feckenham took the kick quickly, finding No8 on his own in the box and his flick on ended up in the net for 2-1 to the home team with 63 minutes gone. Carter started to come into his own as Feckenham tired. First his shot went just wide of the right post, then a mazy run from deep past several defenders, saw his cross shot just miss the left post, then he cleverly fed Thompson who in turn fed Smith who had the ball nicked off his toe as he prepared to shoot. Powell should have made the points safe as he firstly shot wide when well placed then hit the post with a deft chip, but Coleshill never gave up and had the last two chances of the game as Carter's fast feet gave him room for a shot and Thompson blasted over with the last kick of the game.
