SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Brown Brace Keeps Town Clear
Hotshot Lei Brown netted a first half double to help Highgate United to a 3-2 win at Coleshill Town - a result that took them three points clear at the top of the table. He prodded his opener past the keeper on 17 minutes and then looped a header into the net for his second ten minutes later. Highgate looked to have wrapped up the victory when Joe Adams fired home his side's third five minutes into the second period only for the home side to bounce back through Danny Tymon nine minutes later. The visitors' cause was not helped when Tom Lacey was shown a straight red for an off-the-ball incident but Coleshill could not take advantage until a minute from time when Jake Murrell headed home.

Match Report
Since promotion to the Alliance in 2009 both sides have struggled to make an impact but this season both sides seem to have got their act together and will surely be involved at the top end of the league rather than the bottom. What hasn't changed is Coleshill's awful record against their oldest rivals. The run of bad results continues with only four wins in the last 24 meetings but it is difficult to see how Coleshill managed to lose this game as they matched the league leaders for long periods.
Highgate started very confidently as you would expect from a table topping side but it was Coleshill who had the better early chances. Dean Rathbone, making his debut, could have scored with his first ever touch in a Coleshill shirt, and in fact could have finished the game with a hat-trick. Chris Gumery had a shot that the visitors keeper made a meal of to push out for a corner, the stopper how-ever was to make up for this later. Danny Douglas had a header go close before Gate took the lead on 17 minutes with their first real attack. Lei Brown finished off a move that was a combination of some neat football but also some dreadful defending. Undeterred, Coleshill continued to have the better chances, Rathbones' powerful shot went just over the bar before Brown increased the lead on 26 minutes again against the run of play. Everyone in the ground but Luke Edwards heard home keeper Paul Hathaway shout "away" but the centre back attempted to head back to his keeper and Brown nipped in to loop the ball over Hathaway into the net. As half time approached Danny Tymon hit the post and Rathbone was denied a goal by the first of several good saves by the Gate keeper and then Rathbone headed over a great cross by Connor Leek as Coleshill finished the half on top but with no reward for their efforts.
Coleshill's chances of getting anything from the game was made almost impossible early in the second half as Joe Adams smashed the ball into the net via the bar at the second attempt after a fine save by Hathaway. 3-0 down with 40 minutes to play sounds like a hammering but the scoreline wasn't a true reflection of the game. A bit of excellent refereeing allowed Coleshill a way back into the match on 59 minutes. Coleshill were awarded a free kick around the half way line. The kick was taken quickly and with the referee waving play on the ball was moved quickly forward to Gumery who rolled the ball into the path of Danny Tymon who hit a superb shot on the run that rattled into the net. Tymon was inspirational as he drove the home team on, setting up Leon Weller who should have done much better than put his shot wide. Chris Lloyd crossed into the box and Weller shot wide again but this time at full stretch. In a very entertaining game Highgate's' Joe Adams hit the post before Tom Lacey was sent off after a scuffle with Nick Ellis. A mistake by Dan Dineen allowed Gate's substitute a chance to put the game to bed but he shot well over. Rathbone had a goal bound header tipped away by the visitors keeper at full stretch and the stopper did just as well to deny Danny Tymon. Rathbone's effort was somehow scrambled off the line before Coleshill finally found a way past the inspired Gate keeper when Jake Murrall headed home a Lloyd cross at the far post but the stopper saved the best for last as he tipped away another Murrall header with the last bit of cloth on his gloves. There was still time for Edwards to head over a corner and then a goal bound shot from Tymon was deflected wide in a grandstand finish which deserved more than yet another defeat at the hands of Highgate United.

DERBY DELIGHT FOR 10-MEN GATE

by Highgate United

10 men Gate managed to survive the final 20 minutes following the dismissal of Tom Lacey to seal a 3-2 victory over Coleshill.

Highgate were forced to dig deep for a hard earned three points and maintain their top spot in the MFA league table against a Coleshill team which will be wondering how it came away empty handed from a contest against visitors who with the dismissal of Tom Lacey were reduced to ten men for the final twenty minutes of this competitively fought local derby.

Whilst Lei Brown’s first half brace and Joe Adams’ strike early in the second half enabled Gate to give a lesson in finishing the hosts were left to rue a hat full of squandered chances which with less haste and more composure might well have ended with them having at least an equal share of the spoils. Manager Lee Adams could also point to an excellent debut from new signing Stuart Parsons which kept his new team’s noses in front, the season long loanee keeper from Solihull Moors replacing regular stalwart Shawn Edwards who after three seasons has left by mutual agreement to try his luck at pastures new. The former Salisbury City custodian came into his own late in the game aiding an under the cosh defence with a string of fine saves to bring about yet another good result at what over recent seasons has become a happy hunting ground for the Tythe Barn Lane outfit.

Craig Hall’s journey of adventure via all points of the globe for the centre half’s Las Vegas stag event meant the only other change to Adams’ team being Tom Reynolds playing alongside Dean Curtis at the heart of defence, Coleshill’s line up containing a scattering of familiar faces with Highgate old boys Luke Edwards, Chris Gumery and Dan Dineen playing against their former club.

Playing in an unfamiliar new away strip of navy blue Gate survived a spate of early pressure, Reynolds sliding in for a confidence boosting tackle on Dean Rathbone, Rathbone then finishing weakly to place a good chance wide. When Brown charged down a defensive clearance Coleshill’s Jack Hulin was alert enough to get in ahead of Shane Benjamin to sweep up the danger, the home side continuing to be creative up front on the break, Parsons turning a twenty yard effort behind for a corner, Trevor Edwards then defending well to halt Connor Leek’s strong run down the left hand side.

Although both sides were guilty of giving the ball away neat build up play did see Adams set up Lacey to cut inside but fail to trouble Paul Hathaway in goal, Lacey’s subsequent solo run ending with a curling shot hooked clear by Luke Edwards and Brown heading Trevor Edwards’ cross into the keeper’s hands. At the other end Connor Leek’s inswinging corner was glanced wide off the head of Daniel Douglas, but it was Gate who were to be rewarded for an improved period of play by taking a seventeenth minute lead Lacey’s pass threaded through by Adams for Brown to beat Hathaway in the race for the ball and toe poke home.

Adam Daly and Reynolds both got tight on Gumery in the box to prevent the centre forward having sight on goal, Coleshill’s pace continuing to cause problems with Daly in quickly for an important challenge on Leek. Brown’s second goal came in twenty seventh minute, home centre half Edwards’ attempted clearance screwed high into the air and as Hathaway hesitated so Brown leapt to head the hanging ball over the keeper into the back of the net. Despite scoring from their only two chances so far Gate had looked good value for their lead but were then forced to work hard to maintain that advantage, Curtis doing well to knock one of a series of crosses from Leek behind for a corner, Parsons saving well from both Leon Weller and Gumery, Karl King then back to help out by sweeping up behind Trevor Edwards after Leek had burst past the right full back. In what was a rare Gate attack Daryl Jones picked up the pieces from Adam’s’ free kick to see a goal bound effort deflected inches beyond the far post, Town going even closer with midfielder Danny Tymon’s fifteen yard daisy cutter striking the base of the upright, Parsons reacting quickest to prevent Weller firing home the loose ball. The half ended with Rathbone despatching a header over the bar from close range but Gate holding on to what by now had become a precious two goal lead.

HT: Coleshill Town 0 v 2 Highgate United

A bright start to the second half saw Lacey and Adams combine the final pass fractionally beyond the reach of the lurking Benjamin, defender Hulin then stretching to block Benjamin’s firm strike, the lead being extended further with a third goal five minutes into the half. The ball found its way from the left to Adams on the edge of the box the initial attempt kept out by the legs of Hathaway but falling for Adams to turn a defender before crashing the ball in from the narrowest of angles.

But just when Gate were looking in a far more positive frame of mind so they were to be hit by a sucker punch a quickly taken 54th minute free kick knocked forward to catch the defence off guard, Gumery laying his pass back for Tymon to beat Parsons with a low firmly struck twenty yard drive. Gate were now living dangerously Curtis clearing in uncompromising fashion from Gumery and Weller narrowly wide with an eight yard volley, Gate’s defence being forced to soak up considerable pressure as Town had the sniff of a second goal in their nostrils. A few moment of respite ended with Hulin heading out Brown’s half volley off Jones’ cross and an intelligently worked free kick by Adams to Brown resulting in Adams smacking the cross bar from twenty yards out which if fractionally closer to a fourth goal would have surely have killed the game as a contest. As it was Gate were reduced to ten men when Lacey’s unnecessary head to head with Nick Ellis resulted in a red card and the signal for the home side to throw everything bar the kitchen sink at an overworked and pressurised Gate defence.

Substitute Reece Lynch did lash one drive over Hathaway’s bar but in a tense finish Gate found themselves pushed deeper and deeper and constantly on the back foot. Parsons twisted in the air to divert a Rathbone header round the post, the custodian then making a point blank save from Edwards at the foot of his right hand upright then falling to parry Tymon’s long ranger to safety. Rathbone struck the woodwork from close range and despite Parsons heroics the keeper stood no chance in his attempts to keep out the inevitable second goal from substitute Jake Murral’s 89th minute header. With their lead hanging by a thread Gate survived more late pressure which saw Parsons again excel in saving from Murral the keeper continuing to frustrate what was to end up a defeated Town side by safely holding on to time added on crosses from Chris Lloyd and Edwards.
