Coleshill would have expected to advance to the second round of the FA Vase when faced with a team mid table in the league below, and at home, but after just 11 minutes the task looked impossible as a young, keen and impressive Warwick team took a two goal lead. It could have been worse as Town were caught cold, still in the changing rooms, and Leigh Phillips latched on to a header from Ryan Langmead but put a great chance wide with only a few minutes on the clock. Chris Gumery had the ball in the net at the other end but the effort was offside. Then on 8 minutes Racing took the lead with a slick move. Phillips fed Terry Morton who did well to get to the bye line and his cross to the far post was met by Langmead who gratefully knocked the ball home. Langmead could have added to his tally but Luke Edwards made a good clearance and then from a free kick Langmead was back again to slam the ball into the net when unmarked in the box. Coleshill took stock, gathered themselves and came back as you would expect from an inform team. Ryan Nash took a free kick just outside the box, his effort hit the bar and Jake Murrall was on hand to force the ball home, 18 minutes gone. Following his fantastic goal last week Nick Ellis nearly did the same but his goalbound effort hit Chris Gumery, then Matt Brown had the ball in the net but again it was off side. Coleshill were starting to dictate play but Racing Club Warwick were quick on the break and looked to have more goals in them. As half time approached Coleshill levelled the scores which gave them a great platform to go on to win the game in the second half. Gumery held the ball up well then knocked it back to Leon Weller who lifted the ball over the defence to allow Matt Brown a run at goal and he confidently lobbed the keeper for his third goal in as many games.
Coleshill dominated the second half but Warwick did themselves proud, and never looked out of the game. Brown forced a save from the impressive Ryan Bennett in the visitors goal, the first of many! Brown, Gumery, Nash and Brown again were all denied by the young stopper who was inspired! Brown's weak header was easily saved before Bennett made the save of the game. A slick move by Coleshill involved Chris Lloyd and Brown who crossed for Danny Tymon who was denied from point blank range by Bennett. Town got their noses in front finally on 71 minutes, Barry Fitzharris's pass released Tymon who crossed for Brown but the ball was just infront of him and the chance appeared to have gone but Brown turned back looked up and rolled the ball to the onrushing Dean Rathbone who never broke stride and shot into the corner. Racing were still giving their all and still looked dangerous on the break but the game ended as a contest in a bazaar incident. The ball went out for a throw in on the half way line, the referee pointed one way and the linesman pointed the other. Both officials changed their minds indicating the other way, arms flapping everywhere! Coleshill took the throw and in an instance Brown ran clear as the whole defence stood still expecting the referee to call play back. Bennett did his best but Brown forced the ball home and every Racing player went to the ref to complain. The referee stood by his decision, you had to feel sorry for the visitors! Bennett still had another couple of saves in him and Langmead should have completed his hat trick as his effort in the dying minutes was on it's way in but Luke Edwards threw himself infront of the ball to block!
Job done in the end but it was hard work!
Coleshill now face a trip to Long Eaton in Derbyshire in the second round of the Vase.
