Tymon Scores Coleshill 50th
Danny Tymon scored Coleshill's 50th goal of what is turning out to be a great season! Town are now just one short of the total scored for the whole of last season, an indication of how far they have come in just 12 months. This win over one of their closest rivals was another impressive display and a real team effort!
The fact that the game went ahead, one of only two that survived the weather, surprised many and conditions were difficult as expected, but both teams were prepared to put on a show and an entertaining game followed. In an end to end start the Mikes had the first real chance when Ryan Edmunds lifted his shot over the bar when well placed. Chris Gumery did well to hold the ball up, turn and shoot, James Beeson in the visitors goal doing well to keep the effort out. Simeone Maye was causing problems with his pace and on one occasion, just as he prepared to shoot, Danny Douglas made a fine saving tackle. Douglas looked much more comfortable at centre back than he had at left back against Quorn and had a fine game. Maye returned minutes later and brought a good save from Paul Hathaway in the home goal. Beeson did well to punch clear a corner when under pressure and Leon Weller made a great tackle as Edmunds prepared to shoot inside the box in what was a very even opening half hour. On 31 minutes Coleshill took the lead with a delightful goal. Declan Kirby got to the bye line but when his cross was cleared it looked like the danger was over. Dean Rathbone pinched the ball back just on the 18 yard line and sent a curling effort over the keeper and into the top corner of the net. Rathbone is always capable of that, a match winner, but in this game he also showed some battling qualities, something he needed to bring to his game. Rathbone then ran 50 yards with the ball to force a corner, Douglas's header blocked within the 6 yard box. Kirk Smith's shot was deflected for a corner by Kirby but Hathaway was commanding to snuff out the danger. Danny Tymon got into the box and went down for what looked a clear penalty but nothing was given.
Both teams made a slow start to the second half but Boldmere enjoyed the majority of possession without ever looking dangerous. Ross Clarke had a goalbound shot blocked by Tymon, and at the other end Rathbone's effort was blocked by Adam Wood. William Calkeld got into the box but was denied a goal scoring opportunity by a combination of Weller and Hathaway as the keeper dove at the strikers feet. Tymon picked the ball up on the edge of his own box and powered into the opposition half before feeding Matt Brown who hit the bar with a powerful shot from 18 yards. Hathaway was diving at feet again but this time it was Ricky Baker who had surged into the penalty area. Boldmere were putting Town under pressure looking for an equaliser but on 82 minutes Coleshill made the game safe. Oliver Casey found Gumery down the left channel who inturn passed to Brown on the edge of the box. A clever flick by Brown left Tymon with a clear shot at goal and the midfielder made no mistake as his effort arrowed into the net. With just seconds remaining Coleshill gave the scoreline a flattering look as Rathbone crossed to the far post, Brown headed goalward bringing a good save from Beeson but Ryan Nash was on hand to force the ball home.

It's not very often Coleshill beat Boldmere by three clear goals (1985 4-0) and this was probably a closer contest than the score suggests but a win is a win and Town maintain their 5th place position.

A View From The Other Side
Taken from Boldmere Web Site
The Mikes suffered a disappointing defeat in a poor game at Pack Meadow.
On a difficult surface there was plenty of endeavour on show without much craft, but the two moments of real quality settled a game where precious little was created from open play after the opening exchanges.

There was a flurry of early activity as James Beeson had to race from his line to bravely cut out a dangerous through ball in the opening minute, then clutch a well struck shot from range. Ryan Edmunds - returning to the side after suspension - then got a decent sight of goal. As he latched onto a through ball, an excellent first touch took him inside his man and clear on goal, but the onrushing Hathaway forced him to fire a hurried shot wide before being clattered by the keeper. The referee, much to The Mikes' frustration, stated that although he saw it was a clear foul he couldn't give a penalty because the shot had already gone wide.

With The Mikes enjoying their best spell of sustained possession in a scrappy affair, they found themselves one down on the half hour. Under no real pressure, they gifted possession away on the edge of their box as they looked to break, giving Rathbone the opportunity to fire home a great strike via the underside of the bar from 20 yards.

The game continued as a tight midfield battle with a succession of dangerous looking set pieces for both sides that came to nothing, with the only real alarm at either end coming when Beeson made a smart close range block after a left wing corner dropped in the danger area.

The play was equally disjointed after the break, again with little clear sight of goal at either end. Besson was relieved to see a lobbed effort clear his bar, but The Mikes were gradually increasing pressure without creating anything clear cut. Half chances were starting to appear. Mark Rose flashed a fiercely struck volley a yard over before Hathaway was sharply from his line to grab the ball from the lurking Edmunds.

The Mikes crucially missed their best opportunity to get on terms with a quarter of an hour to go. Stuart Grosvenor had thrown on youth teamer Fraser Doyle and the lively striker played a lovely reverse ball on the edge of the box to release Ricky Baker. He skipped past the last man but his touch was a yard heavy allowing Hathaway to smother before he could get his shot away.

The cost of this was evident on 82 minutes as Town got the killer second goal, with frustrating similarities to the opening goal from The Mikes' point of view. Again, possession was squandered under little pressure, leaving Tymon in space to drill home an excellent low finish from the edge of the 'D'.

Simeon Maye then went desperately close as he slid in ahead of his marker at the far post, but his flick from Edmunds set piece went narrowly wide. The game was up for The Mikes and Elliot Nash gave the score a somewhat flattering gloss in stoppage time, firing home after Beeson's double save.

There was no doubt that The Colemen deserved their win overall, but The Mikes will be rueing the fact that they gave the home side a big helping hand by gifting comfortable possession away for the opening two goals, which came at critical times when game was in the balance.
