Heather St. John’s sprung a surprise victory against title chasing Coleshill Town with a 1-0 win to keep their MFA survival hopes alive. After coming close on several occasions, the hosts finally broke the deadlock on 69 minutes as Hayden Johns headed home a free kick to take The Saints within 4 points of safety. As for Coleshill Town, Casey’s men simply weren’t at the races at St. John’s Park losing their second game inside a week leaving them 9 points a drift of the top.
Heading into the visit to Heather St. John’s, Paul Casey already knew this fixture was going to be as straight forward as the league table made it out to be. Despite winning 9 games in a row prior to Tuesday’s defeat to Kirby Muxloe, The Colemen had reasons to be concerned with several first team names unavailable. Both Jack Hulin and Barry Fitzharris were away whilst Danny Tymon was serving the final game of his two match ban after collecting numerous yellow cards this season.
However, Coleshill didn’t let their absentees show any weakness as the team selected by Casey stepped up in a fairly even opening 20 minutes. With limited chances at either end, Coleshill had the majority of the ball. The best chance of the opening quarter of an hour came from the hosts however. The Saints were awarded a free kick which Baines took however skipper Chapman couldn’t convert as he smashed the ball into the side netting.
On 21 minutes, Chapman had the opportunity to break the scoring again however his testing shot was well matched by the in-form Paul Hathaway of Coleshill Town.
With little action to discuss in the opening half hour, the scores remained goalless. Coleshill then had their first real opportunity of the game on 31 minutes. A corner was swung in only to be met by the head of Luke Edwards and see it go over the woodwork.
Heather responded accordingly with a chance of their own. On 35 minutes, Lonsdale ran beyond Worthington only to see his effort flash across goal and over the bar. With the interval approaching, it was clear to see there was nothing to separate the sides despite such a large margin between the clubs in the league.
As the teams came out for the second half, Heather continued battling away at Coleshill in the same fashion they did in the opening 45 minutes. Coleshill had to thank Hathaway for being their saving grace once again preventing a superb strike from Woodbine on 50 minutes. Then just moments later, Lonsdale had the best chance of the game as the ball trickled just wide of Hathaways’s post.
On 58 minutes, Coleshill Town began to fight their way back into the game. The Colemen arguably experienced their best chance of the entire 90 minutes here as Chris Lloyd twisted and turned manoeuvring around the Saints’ defence and then unleashing a beastly strike on for it to be saved by Woodward.
Then finally, on 69 minutes after constantly knocking on the door, Heather’s perseverance paid dividends. Woodbine swung in a teasing free kick which was met by the head of Hayden Johns to gift the hosts the lead.
With the minutes counting down on the clock, time was running out for Coleshill to grab an equaliser. Late efforts from Rathbone and Douglas were off target for the visitors and they became even more frustrated. The Colemen almost went 2-0 down on 86 minutes however Heather skipper Chapman rattled the cross bar with his late strike.
The final whistle then blew as Heather extending their unbeaten run to 3 games in their quest to avoid relegation. Coleshill slipped to their second straight defeat with their title hopes slowly disappearing. Coleshill are currently 4th in the league with 68 points.
Coleshill Town next play on Wednesday 9th April 2014 away at Tipton Town with a kick off time of 19:45PM.
