SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Shane Leads Way As Coles Burn Red Hot
Two goals from striker Shane Benjamin and a virtuoso midfield display from Tom Weale helped Coleshill Town to an 8-2 mauling against league newcomers Brocton. The Warwickshire side were far too clinical for their hosts, easing into a five goal interval lead. Dan Tymon hit a fifth minute opener with Dan Douglas doubling the lead soon after. Matt Gasper then bagged the goal of the game with a fierce drive from the edge of the area before Benjamin and Jon Jones hit the target. Brocton sub Dan Lomas had a hand in both his side's goals for player-boss Dave Berks and Jamie Evans to cut the deficit. But there was no stopping Coleshill who wrapped up the points with second half goals from Matt Brown, Weale and a Benjamin spot kick.

Brocton 2 Coleshill Town 8

Welcome to the Midland Football League Premier Division. Generous hosts Brocton were given a lesson in finishing and hard work off the ball by a Coleshill team who were rampant long before the final whistle. A half time reshape and a much better second period limited the damage but there is a lot to learn and no let up in the difficult matches.
A stray pass in midfield was an early gift for the visitors and in Shane Benjamin they have a target who can hold the ball and bring team mates into play. One pass found him, he held it, slipped it to Dan Tymon and from 20 yards Tymon gave Callum Barrett no chance.
That was on 5 minutes. On 13, a high, loopy throw could only be punched weakly by Barrett, who was under pressure and visiting centre back Dan Douglas, doubtless in the area more for the possible heading opportunities, found himself unmarked and with time in the box to side foot home and double the lead.
Brocton came within a whisker of keeping in touch when Dave Berks found Sam Bell on a diagonal run across the opposing box. Bell lifted the ball over keeper Chris Jay, but could only watch as it slipped the wrong side of the post.
Coleshill came hard again, getting the ball beyond Brocton’s back line quickly. Rob Tomlinson got to it first and prevented a corner, but in doing that he let in Matt Gasper, who hit a beauty to put the lead at 3—0 and still only twenty minutes in.
Bell then had another chance after Jamie Evans found the pitch open up for him as he advanced, putting him in the position to find Bell direct. A moment’s hesitation was all it took for the opportunity of a shot to disappear. In a brief interlude of Brocton attacks, Berks was fed by Dave Ablewhite and found Bell’s run again. This time a deflection carried the shot wide and then Berks himself struck a good free kick just wide. Finally, just before the half hour, Berks and Bell combined again and Berks’ shot was pushed round for a corner by a full length dive from Jay.
When Coleshill attacked next the ball was cleared and immediately returned to the danger area. Brocton had been slow to come out and Benjamin was left centrally placed in the area with time to control and place his shot. There was still time for a 5th before the break. The free kick awarded was generous, but, when it could only be punched a few yards away, Jonathan Jones got into the action with a firmly struck shot from close range.
The reshuffle seemed to make Brocton more solid, but their good early second half efforts were quickly undone when a penalty was awarded. Benjamin scored easily to make it 6-0.
Then Brocton had another good patch. Berks lobbed the keeper to pull one back and Gary Fife then slipped Berks in again only for the shot to clip past the outside of the post.
Tom Weale scored from distance with what was probably the goal of the game and then Jamie Evans’ run on the left was found by a raking pass from Dan Lomas. Evans kept his nerve to beat the keeper. Berks managed to strike a free kick and hit both posts and run safe to sum up the home side’s day and Matt Brown completed the rout with a tap in after yet another midfield gift had left Brocton exposed.
Brocton: Callum Barrett, Dave Ablewhite, Jamie Evans, Rob Tomlinson, Matt Dockerty, Levi Bailey, Sam Bell, Carl Morris,
Gary Fife, Dave Berks, Steve Hopkinson.
Used Substitutes: Matt Hardiman, Charlie Jones, Dan Lomas.
