SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill's hopes of an FA Cup upset were ruined by Barwell's second half comeback. Coleshill were full value for their half time lead, which came courtesy of Jonathan Jones, but goals from Danny Jenno and Alex Tomkinson in a six minute spell after the break sent Barwell through. Thomas Weale's header had been saved by Barwell keeper Liam Castle and dean Rathbone's curling shot hit the upright before the Midland Premier hosts went ahead on 42 minutes. Visitors defender Eddie Nisevic fell over as Jones harried him on the right flank and the Coleshill midfielder's 25 yard chip was only pushed into the net by Castle. But Barwell's first attempt on target provided the equaliser on 61 minutes, Jenno heading home from a corner. Six minutes later, Tomkinson moved unmarked into the area to volley home, despite keeper Chris Jay's efforts, to put Northern Premier Barwell in front. Oliver Casey's goal line header kept out an effort from Barwell striker Brendan Murphy while a perfect challenge from Nisevic thwarted Shane Benjamin as Coleshill pressed.
MATCH REPORT
For any newcomers in the biggest crowd in many a year it must have been difficult to understand why the visitors were two leagues above the home team as Coleshill dominated the first 45 minutes. Town keeper Chris Jay had a very quiet half as the Northern Premier League side failed to get a single effort on target. On the other hand Coleshill were unlucky not to go into the break further ahead than just the Jonathan Jones effort. Tom Weale headed goalward and keeper Liam Castle did a Gordon Banks impression as he dug the ball off the line at the foot of the post. Dean Rathbone's curling shot thundered off the woodwork before Town took the lead on 42 minutes when Jonathan Jones found himself clear and the keeper off his line. Jones lobbed the ball from fully 25 yards and scrambling backward Castle could only palm the ball into the net.
Barwell were always going to up their game in the second half and it was a question of whether Town could see the game through but they never matched the quality of the first half and two goals in six minutes turned the tide. Danny Jenno headed home a corner on 61 minutes. Coleshill don't normally get caught out at set pieces but Jenno was unchallenged and had time to direct his effort beyond Jay. On 67 minutes former Town youth player Alex Tomkinson was given time in the box to volley home despite Jay getting a hand to it. Jay then tipped a shot from Stevenson over the bar and Daryl Jones headed a Murphy effort off the line as Barwell looked to extend their advantage. Coleshill's heads never dropped and they could have forced a replay but efforts from Shane Benjamin and Danny Tymon were blocked with great tackles as the visitors held firm to go through to the next round.
A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
A Report from Barwell web site.
Barwell came through a tricky tie against a resolute Coleshill Town side.
The home side could have gone ahead on the quarter hour after Liam Castle’s clearance deflected towards his Own Goal but Jamie Hood raced back to head off the line with Shane Benjamin in hot pursuit.
Soon after former Canary Tom Weale met a Dean Rathbone cross to head goalwards but Castle saved well at his post.
Towards the break, Coleshill went close as Weale’s cross deflected off Jonathan Jones to Rathbone whose curling shot cannoned off the post.
The home side did take the lead after 42 minutes as Jones lobbed Castle who was off his line and the backpedalling keeper could only punch the ball into his own net.
The second half belonged to Barwell. They eventually equalised on the hour as Danny Jenno headed home a Callum Woodward corner and six minutes later, Alex Tomkinson converted a Jon Stevenson volleyed cross to give Barwell the lead.
The Canaries took over and Stevenson could have scored ten minutes later as his curling shot from 20 yards drew and excellent save from home keeper Chris Jay. Soon after Brendan Murphy had his chance to extend the lead but his curling effort was headed off the line by Daryl Jones.
Coleshill mounted a late offensive but Barwell hung on to claim the tie.
