SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town maintained their title push with a hard-fought 2-1 defeat of Brocton. A Shane Benjamin penalty was all that separated the sides at the interval and it was just as tense in the second half. Paul McMahon levelled on 51 minutes but Coleshill grabbed the points when Simeon Cobourne hit the winner two minutes from time.

MATCH REPORT
After a hectic few weeks of high pressure football that has shot Coleshill into the title race and the semi-final of the Birmingham Senior Cup, this was a game too far! Several players were missing due to illness or injury, Danny Douglas had to pull out during the warm-up and the players that took the field were on their last legs on a strength sapping heavy pitch. Manager Paul Casey will need every single member of his squad as the games still come thick and fast with a League Cup Quarter Final to come on Tuesday away to Boldmere St Michaels!

Brocton started confidently which belied their 17th place in the league but it was the home team that took the lead on 10 minutes when Mykel Beckley was brought to the ground inside the penalty area by Rudd and Shane Benjamin made no mistake from the spot for his 25th league goal of the season. As in many games this season the opposition dictated possession but the Town defence held firm and protected goalkeeper Chris Jay, who had another comfortable afternoon. David Berks was pulling the strings and he set up Fife, McMahon and had a couple of efforts himself but non really tested Jay. Tom Weale, easily Coleshill's best player on the day, surged into the box but his looping shot went over the bar.
Half Time: Town 1-0 Brocton.

An early Coleshill corner was headed back across goal by Rob Evans and Beckley had two efforts both cleared off the line, then Evans sent a volley from just outside the box inches wide but the visitors levelled the scores on 53 minutes. A long ball over the top caught the defence flat footed and Paul McMahon lobbed the ball over Jay who had come well out of his goal and into an empty net. Beckley turned and shot inside the box but Brocton keeper Barrett saved with his feet. Brocton continued to dominate proceedings with Coleshill unable to get any impetus! The visitors had a great chance to take the lead when substitute Putka nipped in between Luke Edwards and Jay but headed over from a great position. Benjamin and Tymon both went close with efforts but it was all laboured and Coleshill had to rely on young super sub Simeon Cobourne to salvage the points. On 88 minutes Leon Weller broke out of defence and ran 60 yards to feed Benjamin inside the box. A clever back heel by the striker sent Cobourne free and although Barrett got a hand to the effort he couldn't keep the ball out, the 109th time Coleshill have found the back of the net in this incredible season. Berks almost snatched a point with a bullet shot in the dying seconds that scrapped the post but Coleshill held on to three very welcome points.

Amazingly Coleshill dropped one place to 4th with this win as Basford leap-frogged them on goal difference.

It's a cruel blow as a last gasp winner breaks Brocton hearts after Paul McMahon brings the Badgers level and chances to win slip away. ....

On paper this must have been a game that Brocton should have had few expectations of a result from. Ultimately it was a 2-1 defeat, but with a display of football that had away supporters bursting with pride and earned generous congratulations from the home management and spectators.
The early loss of a goal through a penalty was a blow but a canny lob from Paul McMahon in the second half buoyed Brocton’s spirits and was no less than they deserved at the time. It could all have been so different too as substitute Lukas Putka looped a header agonisingly over with his first touch after replacing McMahon.
Away hearts sank when, in injury time home substitute Simon Cobourne finished off a break despite plenty of Brocton bodies thrown into his path with a deflected shot to beat Calum Barrett and steal the points.
It was just ten minutes into the game when a pull back in Brocton’s box was spotted by the referee and punished with a penalty which Shane Benjamin took with ease. Badgers manager Dave Berks soon lifted his side with a trademark drift into the opposing box and shot. His first effort was blocked and Jamie Evans picked it up and drove at the goal, only to see his effort palmed away.
Evans was getting time and space on the left and found willing help from Berks and Gary Fife, next putting McMahon through on goal. Chris Jay, in the Coleshill goal, anticipated well and beat McMahon to the ball. Charlie Jones and Carl Morris had to work hard in midfield to try to limit Coleshill’s progress, but could do little to curb their long game as Benjamin in particular kept Ed Booth fully occupied at the heart of Brocton’s defence.
Indeed Brocton looked at their most vulnerable when fully committed to attack such as from their own corners. Coleshill broke quickly and purposefully and on several occasions, with Booth up field in attack, it was Jones or Morris who were on hand to hold up play.
It was after good work from Dave Ablewhite deep in defence which set up McMahon for his equaliser. He timed his run through the back line to perfection and lobbed the advancing keeper.
With Brocton now at their best and playing some attractive and penetrating football, Brocton were able to put on real pressure and Putka was unlucky that his head over Jay was so soon after his introduction. It was a chance that he would rarely miss. The pressure led to Brocton being caught on the counter as the last moments of the game approached and finally a break led to a goal for Cobourne. Berks still managed a thunderous volley into the side netting as a finale but the points had slipped away.

Brocton: Calum Barrett, Callum Rudd, Jamie Evans, Ed Booth, Dave Ablewhite, Charlie Jones, Paul McMahon, Carl Morris, Gary Fife, Dave Berks, Dan Lomas.

Used Substitutes: Rob Tomlinson, Lukas Putka.
