COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Coleshill Suffer Double Woe In League And Cup Competitions

Coleshill will have to come from behind to win a place in the League Cup Final after slipping to a narrow first-leg defeat on Tuesday night. They started the game well and Mykel Beckley hit the bar on 20 minutes before Tom Weale fired wide. Beckley went close again as the two sides went in goalless at half time. Rocester opened the scoring on 50 minutes, against the run of play and, despite the best efforts of Coleshill to equalise, they were unable to find the equaliser. Coleshill Assistant Ross Thorpe said: "Full credit to Rocester, they defended superbly. We started the game really well. We came out of the blocks quicker than Usain Bolt. But we couldn't score and you start to worry then that, if you concede first, it might be one of those nights. They nicked the first goal and then basically said: "come and break us down". Even when you have the talent we do, that can be hard sometimes and that's how it turned out. As I say, you have to give Rocester credit for the win."

SHAW GIVES ROMANS FIRST LEG ADVANTAGE by Dan Bishop

Match Sponsored by JOHNSONS of CHEADLE

It’s advantage Rocester in the Polymac Services League Cup Semi Final after Liam Shaw’s goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Coleshill Town in the first leg.

The Hillsfield faithful were treated to an entertaining and open game, but Shaw’s early second half strike proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring twice in the opening quarter of an hour. An intricate passing move saw the ball eventually find Ryan Nash on the right wing, whose pinpoint cross was headed against Richard Froggatt’s cross bar by Mykel Beckley; then when Tom Weale’s shot was blocked the ball fell to Nash who drilled a low first time shot just wide of the near post from the edge of the box.

Although the Romans were producing plenty of attacking play themselves in the first half, they were finding genuine goal scoring chances harder to come by. Their best opportunities came from set pieces, and a thunderous Andrew Mottershead free kick ricocheted clear off a defender when it looked destined for the net, before Shaw pounced on the loose ball and forced Coleshill’s Chris Jay into an excellent save.

The balance of play tipped slightly in Rocester favour in the minutes after this chance, and Rob Ritchie-Smith’s corner almost fell to Dan Brown while Mottershead couldn’t keep his shot down after breaking through.

However, the end to end nature of the tie soon returned and Nash fired a shot across the face of Froggatt’s goal after a quick break from Coleshill just prior to the interval.

Rocester finally broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half. Mottershead won an aerial challenge in midfield and the ball was picked up by Callum Thompson, who found Dan Brown. The skipper tried to weave his way into the visitors' box, but just as it looked as though he had run into trouble Shaw popped up and smashed the ball past Jay.

Luke Edwards almost found an immediate response when he hooked an effort against Froggatt’s cross bar, but having worked hard for their lead the Romans were not going to surrender it lightly, coping admirably with all that Coleshill could throw at them.

Mottershead headed just shy of the top corner from Ritchie-Smith’s cross, but when Jay pumped the resultant goal kick forward to set Beckley clear on the right the danger was snuffed out by Shaw producing an excellent tackle deep in his own half.

Meanwhile, when Weale went for a 50/50 ball on the edge of the box he lost out to a brave challenge from Tom Brown.

When Beckley did get behind the Rocester defence and delivered a dangerous cross towards the far post, Kyle Wadsworth took no chances and hooked the ball safe at the expense of a corner.

As Coleshill pressed forward Rocester were alert to the prospect of hitting them on the break. A crunching challenge by Tom Brown saw him win the ball off Dean Rathbone on the halfway line, and Brown then spread the play across field to Wadsworth who in turn fed Ritchie-Smith, only for the latter to blaze over after beating his full back to go clear.

Mottershead also miscued his shot after the next break from Rocester saw him play a neat one-two with Ritchie-Smith on the edge of the Coleshill box.

There was an air of resignation to Weale’s tame strike into Froggatt’s hands a minute from time, and indeed it was the Romans who came closest to adding to the goal tally when Mottershead hooked on Froggatt’s kick to Dan Brown, who then laid the ball into Ritchie-Smith’s path, but the finish was again wayward.
