SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Beckley Keeps Town In The Honours Race

Coleshill Town kept their slim title hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Alvechurch. But with leaders Basford United romping to a 6-0 win at Quorn, the championship looks like being theirs to lose. Coleshill had to come from behind before securing the points. Alvechurch skipper Michael McGrath pounced on a poor clearance and cut inside his marker before firing home on 19 minutes. But it was all-square when Chris Hughes collected a throw, turned and fired his shot into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Coleshill's winner came on 64 minutes when Mykel Beckley put in a cross and Shane Benjamin poked the ball home from close range.

Coleshill are beginning to break the records set last season as their highest finish at Level 5 in their 130 year history. On Saturday the win over Alvechurch took them to 24 wins, one better than last year, and 96 goals, two more than last time, and they are just one point away from equalling last terms total and still have five games to play. Also, Shane Benjamin's winner took him to 40 goals which is now four more than the previous club record!

Coleshill's success this term is taking it's toll as games come thick and fast! Eight regular starters where missing from Saturday's squad but the 14 who took to the field had just enough to see off a lively visiting side!

It was a slow start in windy conditions! A Shane Benjamin shot was deflected for a corner, Michael McGrath shot wide and visiting keeper Shaun Edwards saved well from Jacob Wright before Alvechurch took the lead on 19 minutes. Captain McGrath took a free kick from just outside the box and cleverly curled the ball round the wall and into the net, contrary to what the Sunday Mercury wrote! Church played some neat football but neither keeper was seriously tested! Just before the break a Tom Weale long throw was partially cleared but Chris Hughes was on hand to smash the ball straight down the middle and into the net for the equaliser.

The second half started in much the same manner with very little action to record. A Tom Weale free kick was placed perfect for Benjamin to get in a strong header and keeper Edwards made a magnificent save diving to his right hand post and parrying the ball away! Jacob Wright and Mykel Beckley had efforts at goal for Coleshill before Town took the lead on 64 minutes. Tom Weale cleverly lifted the ball over the Church defence to the overlapping Beckley whose cross was met at the far post by the stretching Benjamin who just managed to direct the ball into the net. Alvechurch responded with Checketts hitting the post following a corner but that was the closest they would come and Coleshill could have increased the lead as Benjamin was free on goal but stood on the ball and the chance was gone!

Next up is a trip to bottom club Heath Hayes on Tuesday night! Coleshill now need a maximum of 8 points from their remaining 5 games to ensure 2nd place!
