SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Brilliant Benjamin Takes Golden Boot

Super Shane Benjamin struck a magnificent seven to smash the league's goalscoring record and help Coleshill Town beat a stunned Coventry Sphinx 8-2. And his seven-goal haul was enough to secure him the Golden Boot, edging out Basford United's Ruben Wiggins-Thomas. It took Benjamin just 11 minutes to open his tally and he added another three before the interval. A minute into the second half he was brought down and duly slotted home the resulting penalty for his fifth. He linked up with Ricky Cutting for his final two goals before setting up Jacob Wright for the eighth. Sphinx's two consolation goals came late on, Luke Downes and Aaron Upoku scoring.

Match Report by Craig Hamilton
After Thursday night's depleted squad narrowly beat a good young Walsall Wood side 2-1. Coleshill came into the last game of the season against Coventry Sphinx with a much stronger squad.

This showed straight from the kick off as Town had much the better of the play, but we had to wait until the 9th minute for the first chance on goal. A long thro in by Rob Evans on the right was headed on by Danny Douglas, Rickie Cutting pounced on the loose ball and fed Shane Benjamin to easily net from 6 yards. Coleshill started to get on top and 2 minutes later a Rob Evans shot was well saved by Murphy in the Sphinx goal. Sphinx first real attack came after 19 minutes but a good left wing cross was easily dealt with by Chris Jay. Good work in midfield by Tom Weale found Craig Milligan on the left and his pin point cross was headed home by Shane Benjamin, 2-0 after 25 minutes. It was becoming all Coleshill now and only 3 minutes later Luke Edwards won the ball, played it forward to Rickie Cutting and another great pass from him found Benjamin sweep the ball past the keeper. 3-0 28 minutes. Sphinx carried on trying to play football and on 36 minutes their centre forward Price was sent free down the middle but Jay in the Coleshill goal was quick off his line and blocked the ball just inside the area. On 39 minutes Rickie Cutting won the ball in midfield and put Tom Weale through on goal. With the keeper advancing Weale unselfishly squared the ball for Benjamin to tap into an empty net for 4-0.
Half Time Coleshill Town 4 v 0 Coventry Sphinx

The second half started with Coleshill well in control and Douglas had a shot well saved by Murphy. But on 50 minutes a harsh looking penalty was given for hand ball. Up stepped Benjamin to score his fifth, 5-0. And now it looked like he could break all goalscoring records. So when he got his 6th on 58 minutes it was no surprise. As a throw in on the left was squared to Benjamin on the edge of the box he turned and shot into the bottom corner. It was now becoming too easy for Coleshill and when a long ball sent Rickie Cutting clear and only had to round the keeper to score but he squared the ball for the on running Benjamin to score his 7th on 63 minutes. Coleshill made a couple of substitutions with Jacob Wright replacing Ryan Nash and Simeon Cobourne coming on for Rickie Cutting. This didn't disrupt the flow and Coleshill were well in control with Sphinx posing no real threat. However Sphinx had two chances to score from free kicks but one was well saved by Jay and the other went over the bar from 25 yards. This was Sphinx's best spell and agood run straight through the middle of Coleshill defence left Downes one on one with Jay who saved at his feet. On 87 minutes Downes persistence paid off only a minute later when he latched onto a loose ball to score from the edge of the box. This gave Sphinx a boost and only two minutes later a long ball over the top of the Coleshill defence found Opuku who rifeld the ball into the net from an acute angle, 7-2. Just reward for Sphinx not throwing in the towel. However the scoring had not finished and some neat play down Coleshill's left saw Oliver Casey put in a great pass to Benjamin who held the ball up on the edge of thearea and then laid it off for the on-rushing Jacob Wright to hit a hard and low shot past the keeper to make it 8-2 on 90 minutes.

What an end to a great season! Coleshill Town FC were presented with their League Runners-Up Trophy after the game!

N.B. Coleshill Town won 8-2 for the second time this season (Brocton back in August) but I know I have nothing in my records to match a player scoreing seven in a game! Tremendous, well done Shane! Shane had already broke the club scorering record but I think he has blown it out of sight and the new record may stand for some time to come!
37 League Goals, 10 Cup Goals, 47 Goals in Total! And a Golden Boot!

Benjamin Runs Riot.....
by Lynton Wilkinson

The last game of the season for Coventry Sphinx and a trip to near neighbours and Midland Football League Premier Division runners up Coleshill Town.

A hat full of senior players were unavailable today so a tough task just got even tougher. The goalkeeper and defence was full of inexperience and 3 of the midfielders were Youth team players. The line up that manager Luke Hopkins had to go into the game with was the most inexperienced he has had to field this season.

We got underway with Coleshill having goal machine Shane Benjamin up front alongside former Sphinx striker Rickie Cutting. These two are proven at this level and I feared the worst against the makeshift Sphinx defence. Just 9 minutes into the game and Benjamin got his first of the match and we looked like we were in for a long afternoon. Minutes later Sphinx keeper Murphy was forced to save a powerful strike as Coleshill started well. Sphinx got their first chance as Brad Hardwick forced the keeper to keep out his effort but almost immediately Coleshill went down the other end and Cutting missed a glorious chance to double the lead. Coleshill looked the most threatening but Sphinx were still well in the game but on the 25th minute the home side made it 2-0 with Benjamin left unmarked to head in from close range. in the 28th minute Benjamin claimed his hat-trick after finishing a through ball well. Heads were starting drop in the young Sphinx team now but Rooney got forward to shoot wide and some good play from Luke Downes set up youngster Hardwick for an attempt on goal. in the 40th minute Coleshill added a forth as Benjamin again found the back of the net with a simple tap in. That was game over and we hadn’t reached half time. Damage limitation had to be the priority now as Coleshill were cruising.

HALF TIME: COLESHILL TOWN 4 COVENTRY SPHINX 0

With the way the first half went it was clear that the only question remaining was how many would Coleshill get and it didn’t take long for the fifth to be added as Benjamin tucked in a penalty in the 51st minute. Benjamin added further goals in the 58th and 63rd minute to take his tally to 7 goals in just over an hour of football. An incredible feat by Benjamin but rarely will he have seen such poor defending. Manager Luke Hopkins took his goalkeeper out of the firing line and replaced him with the Sphinx under 16’s keeper Callum Brown. The young lad did well in goal as Coleshill eased off with the job well and truly done and Sphinx grabbed themselves a couple of late consolation goals with a tidy finish from top scorer Luke Downes and a thunderous strike from Aaron Opoku to make the score 7-2. Coleshill still had time to add another as substitute Wright got in on the act to make the final score 8-2. Benjamin demonstrated the difference an experienced and proven striker can make but Sphinx were a well beaten side today. Sphinx have had a young side out all season and as the season has drawn to an end it was clear they were tiring. The experience will hopefully do them good and with the addition of some proven and experienced players I’m confident they will have what it takes to push the club forward.

FULL TIME: COLESHILL TOWN 8 COVENTRY SPHINX 2

MAN OF THE MATCH: Ashley Jackson

A poor performance all round today but one player worth a mention is club captain Ashley Jackson. He was nowhere near fit to play with a knee injury causing him serious problems but despite medical advice he came off the bench and gave us a half an hour demonstration of his experience. Jackson gives his all for the club, is a worthy captain and Luke Hopkins will be hoping he returns to full fitness during the summer.
