You've got to feel sorry for Ellesmere who travelled through horrendous traffic on a Friday night only to meet an inspired Coleshill team who, in their third game of the season, clicked into gear! At the same stage in the competition last season Town despatched Nuneaton Griff 10-0 and got a mention in the FA Cup Final programme. To go one better, and a mention on Football Focus, is a club record in the cup and you need to go back to 2007 to see it matched in any competition when the Colemen beat Alveston 11-0 in a league game. But the club record still stands as Town beat Dosthill 12-0 way, way back in 1910 in a Fazeley Charity Cup game.
Everybody was on their game and came up against a young side that although played some neat passing football and kept good possession at times, were toothless up front and static at the back. A special mention needs to go to Ricky Cutting who, in his first appearance of the season, harried, harassed, pressurised the visitors defence from the first minute and his work rate was contagious as the rest of his team mates then did the same! Luke Edwards was immense at the back, Leon Weller overlapped down the right wing more than he has done in some time. Will Worthington had his best game, Dean Rathbone tackled and headed the ball, Luke Barlone looked a class act as he led the line and Demetrius Smikle looks a great find. Alex Baird looked assured, Gio Dainty had his best game in Coleshill's colours and Tom Weale, as usual, was in contention for Town's man of the match! All three used subs contributed to an all round impressive performance!
Luke Barlone already had a header saved before Coleshill took the lead on just four minutes. A Tom Weale long throw was headed on by Ricky Cutting to Luke Edwards who was allowed time and space to turn in the box and shoot through a crowded goalmouth and into the net. Two minutes later Will Worthington took a free kick from 10 yards inside his own half. As the ball floated into the box the Rangers keeper, Leon Reece, came to punch but he was beaten to the ball by Barlone who back-headed into the net. On 10 minutes Barlone cleverly fed Cutting wide left and his dangerous ball along the six yard box was cleared out to the waiting Weale who picked his spot for No3. Little had been seen of the visitors as an attacking force but a loose back pass nearly gifted them a goal but Luke Edwards was on hand to clean up. Leon Weller saw a short rise over the bar, the perimeter fence and the house behind, Demetrius hit the post before No4 came along as Edwards looping cross was met by Barlone who headed over the keeper and into the goal. Sean Griffiths had a shot blocked after a fine run, Worthington's effort from distance would have gone in but was deflected over the bar, Weller's cross was headed against the post by Cutting, but Weller's next cross was inch perfect for Barlone to tap home for his hat-trick! Dean Rathbone won the ball in midfield and fed Smikle who passed to Cutting and kept running and when the return pass came in he was on hand to tap home No6. No7 was from a Smikle cross that Barlone chested down and calmly picked his spot. Will Twyford looked to be clean through but Town keeper Paul Hathaway was quickly off his line to kick clear and Jud Ellis, easily Rangers best player, shot straight into Hathaway's midriff! Smikle jincked inside and out and when his shot came back off the keeper it hit Cutting and almost went in!
Barlone off and Simeon Cobourne on meant a different problem for the Rangers defence and his pace nearly brought instant rewards as he was denied by a defender in one run and the keeper in another. A Smikle corner was headed back across goal by Edwards at the far post and Giovanni Dainty volleyed just over the bar. On 53 minutes Cobourne got his goal as he beat defender and keeper to the ball and despite being forced wide he still managed to find the net. Hathaway parried a powerful Ellis shot. Smikle's fine run down the left ended with a cracking shot across the keeper to snuggle into the net for No9. Cobourne lifted the ball over the bar from a great position and then saw the keeper make a great save form another effort. On 71 minutes a great ball by Weller was controlled by substitute Danico Johnson's first touch and his second touch set up Cobourne to role the ball into an empty net. Smikle's shot was blocked on the line and cleared for a corner and when the resulting cross came out to Rathbone on the edge of the box he smashed the ball into the middle of the net. That was the end of the scoring but not the action. Rangers keeper Reece was sent off as he handled outside the box! Simeon Cobourne hit the side netting twice and Ellis made Hathaway work with a save at full stretch!
Coleshill now entertain Stafford Rangers in the FA Cup Preliminary round and although it is a Town home tie, the game is to be played at Stafford!
One last thing, a minute's silence before the game for former Coleshill, Wolverhampton, WBA and Ipswich player Danny Hegan, who passed away earlier this week, was respected perfectly, thank you all who attended.
Rest in Peace Danny Hegan!!!!
