REPORT
Coleshill Town's longest rivals, Highgate United, left Pack Meadow with a well deserved three points in one of the best performances seen at Pack Meadow this season. The Colemen have lost eleven league games this season but have rarely been outplayed, but other than the first twenty minutes, Coleshill were second best throughout the game.
Town started well enough and had a couple of chances to open the scoring and even had a good shout for a penalty but when the Gate took the lead on 22 minutes, there looked to be only one winner. Edgington made ground down the left flank and his cross was met at the near post by Ellis who volleyed into the net giving home keeper Paul Hathaway no chance. A very aggressive game had swung the visitors way and Coleshill struggled to get a foot-hold but Gate's second goal on 37 minutes looked fortunate as a Mooney free kick was headed goal-ward, rather than a goal attempt, and somehow found the top corner of the net.
Coleshill had more possession in the second half without overly troubling the visitors keeper Catlow. Craig Milligan hit a shot from 30 yards that Catlow pushed over the bar, Luke Edwards hit the post from a Tom Weale corner and Simeon Cobourne ever so nearly got on the end of a Shane Benjamin flick on but it was Highgate that scored again on 82 minutes and again it was fortunate. Coleshill had cleared a corner and although the ball came back into the box there seemed to be little danger but the ball deflected to centre half Turner who had stopped up following the corner and his smart strike found the back of the net. Two fortunate goals Yes, but Gate thoroughly deserved the win on the balance of play!
A disappointing display by the home team but there are plenty of games left to turn that round and get into the top six where manager Paul Casey believes his side should be.

*If there was any doubt that Highgate United are Coleshill's nemesis then a look at the stats should put that to bed! Town and Gate have played each other 82 times since 1975 with the Colemen coming out on top 17 times but suffering defeat on an incredible 42 occasions.

CIZZLA TOO HOT FOR COLEMEN
By Highgate United

Two goals from debutant Curvin 'Cizzla' Ellis capped a fine performance from Highgate in Tuesday nights derby on the 3G at Pac Meadow

An excellent result for Highgate from a very good all round team performance against a Coleshill side which was never allowed to play to its full potential, the visitors comfortably in charge throughout and fully deserving of the three points as well as the added bonus of a clean sheet.

Solihull Moors loanee Curvin Ellis marked his debut by giving Ashley Pulisciano’s side a two goal half time cushion, centre half Scott Turner wrapping the game up with number three five minutes from the end. Having seen very little action over recent weeks Gate could have been excused of being ring rusty but far from it as they turned in one of their best displays of the season so far, looking the sharper of the two sides throughout the whole of a highly entertaining ninety minutes.

Manager Pulisciano was once again forced to shuffle his pack and with Tom Lacey commited to work and Colby Lewis-McAdams and Ricardo Richards both still injured, Ellis came in up front alongside Lei Brown, Aaron Brown returned from suspension to add height to a midfield lacking in that department whilst Trevor Edwards reverted to right full back with Joseph Cole accompanying Turner at the heart of defence, another new face, Declan Attenborrow, starting on the bench.

Although beaten at home to a last minute goal in mid November Coleshill’s Pack Meadow has always been a happy hunting ground for the Gate and straight from the kick off Connor Mooney’s through ball found Ellis free but in an offside position, Lei Brown then testing Paul Hathaway at the foot of the keeper’s right hand post. Former Highgate player Shane Benjamin set up Ricardo Reid for a drive saved low down by Bradley Catlow, Joseph Halsall then sending a 25 yard shot whistling inches the wrong side of the upright. The lively start continued with Lei Brown chesting the ball down and going similarly close from the same distance and from a quick counter attack Dale Taylor and Aaron Brown combined for Mooney to hit his shot inches too high.

Mooney was proving dangerous from dead ball situations firstly from a tenth minute free kick which ended with Hathaway holding Aaron Brown’s header under his own cross bar but on the quarter of an hour mark the hosts were to create the first clear cut chance when Tom Weale slipped his pass beyond the defence only for Reid to beat Catlow but drag a golden opportunity wide. It was by now end to end football played at pace, Town’s Joshua Quaynor hitting a twenty yard free kick wide, Edwards’ defensive clearance sweeping play to the other end where Ellis’ shot on the turn was comfortably held by Hathaway, the striker then off target with a header from Edwards’ deep cross.

The breakthrough came in 22nd minute with play built up from the back by Cole, Ellis turning the ball in off Lei Brown’s perfectly delivered cross from the left hand side. With Gate having gained the initiative the goal was no more than deserved, Aaron Brown close to extending the lead with a downward header off Nathan Pulisciano’s assist well held by Hathaway. A Nathan Edgington free kick was headed out with Lei Brown ready to pounce, Taylor then releasing Gate’s leading scorer to sting the keeper’s palms from the narrowest of angles. Brown was then close with a deflected effort which spun marginally beyond the far post and out of play, whilst at the other end Edwards defended well to get in ahead of and deny Benjamin a rare sight on goal. In 37th minute Ellis made it a first night to remember by completing his brace, a firm header off another Mooney free kick floating beyond Hathaway’s reach to nestle nicely inside the left hand corner of the well beaten custodian’s net, Gate going in at the break more than amply rewarded for what had been a hard working first forty five minutes.

HT Coleshill Town 0 v 2 Highgate United

The home side made a positive start to the second half with Benjamin despatching a header over the bar and Catlow saving low down from Mykel Beckley, Town sending out an early message that they were intent, albeit in vain, on making early inroads into Gate’s lead. Catlow was again called into action when tipping over Craig Milligan’s long range effort for a corner, one of a series of flag kicks well defended by an equally well organised Gate defence.

A strong Edwards’ run upfield ended with a shot fired well off target and although Town had upped the pressure they rarely looked a threat but substitute Simon Cobourne should have done better than find the side netting off Benjamin’s header over the face of goal. Having survived what had been a difficult fifteen minutes Gate again took a grip on proceedings, Edgington picking out Lei Brown in the box the number eleven to be denied by a razor sharp tackle, Brown then trying his luck from wide on the right but failing to trouble Hathaway in goal. Mooney looked to have squirmed his way through a packed defence only for the busy keeper to smother the ball at the midfielder’s feet, Mooney once again causing trouble with a thirty yard free kick which found its way through a pack of players only for the ball to bobble tantalisingly beyond the far post.

Attenborrow’s first touch gave Mooney a chance driven wide, the substitute then having a hand in the third 82nd minute goal delivering a cross touched on by Aaron Brown and swept in by Turner at close range. In the dying minutes Coleshill’s Cobourne was denied what by then would have been a consolation goal with a powerful effort smacked against the foot of the upright, but this was Highgate’s night and Catlow’s goal was to survive intact at the end of what had been an outstanding team display on what for the visitors was an unfamiliar artificial surface to which, following their recent experiences of the inclement weather, they had adapted like ducks to water.
