SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Lye Town won 3-0 at Coleshill Town thanks largely to quick-fire first half goals from Ben Billingham and Ryan Rowe. Dreniz Bala rounded off the scoring a minute from time.

What is about teams from the Black Country that Coleshill struggle with? Yes they are big and strong and very physical but Town have dealt with sides like that before! Coleshill have now played Lye Town four times and have lost all four! When the Colemen were first promoted to the Alliance they came across Tipton Town and it wasn't until the tenth attempt that they gained their first point and had to wait until the twelfth game for a win! Hopefully we can stop the rot and beat Lye way before it gets to that level!!!

In this game the points were in the bag for Lye as early as the 13th minute when they went 2-0 up! The visitors front two were both playing two levels above until recently, and it showed as their movement pulled Coleshill's defence apart. On ten minutes a long ball caught the defence square and allowed Billingham a free run at goal. Town keeper Paul Hathaway came out of his box and Billingham slipped the ball past him and into an empty net. The wind was causing problems but when Rob Evans left a cross field ball thinking it was going out, it left Wilkins clear and his cross was met at the near post by Rowe who smashed the ball into the roof of the net on 13 minutes. In reply Mykel Beckley's effort was saved by Bedford, then a ball from Sam Adkins was "dummied" by Beckley leaving Luke Barlone with a shot at goal but Bedford made an even better save. Lye had the ball in the net from a corner but the effort was disallowed for a push on Hathaway. Hathaway saved from Rowe then Billingham from distance but it was Bedford working the hardest as he saved a powerful shot from Reece Leek.

Lye had enjoyed the 3G surface in the first half as they played the better football but in the early stages of the second half Coleshill showed what they are capable of with some slick play as they pinned the visitors back. Beckley was having some joy down the left and one of his crosses found Leek at the far post but he shot wide from a great position. Rob Evans chipped a ball into the box and Luke Edwards headed on only to see his effort cleared off the line. At one point Lye were camped in their own 18 yard box with Coleshill firing in shot after shot! There was a couple of shouts for hand ball but on the whole Lye defended magnificently and there was no way through for the Colemen. Craig Milligan's shot brought out the best save of the afternoon from Bedford then Rob Evans shot inches wide, before Connor Leek shot just over the bar. Lye looked dangerous on the break but had limited chances in the second half as they defended their two goal lead but in the dying minutes they increased their lead as Genhard crossed into the box, Billingham's shot was blocked but the ball fell nicely to substitute Bala who saw his shot parried by Hathaway but it just had enough to cross the line.
A bad day at the office with Coleshill only playing in spurts, but when they did turn it on they looked more than capable! A chance to put things right comes about quickly as they play their second home game in three days against Coventry Sphinx on Bank Holiday Monday!

Good form continues
By Brian Blakemore
6 wins out of last 7 matches

The first time playing on Coleshill's new 3G pitch. At times during the game the weather was appalling but the pitch coped well.
Another good away result where we started very positively and were 2 goals up within 13 minutes, through Ben Billingham and Ryan Rowe. We controlled the game from thereon and were rarely threatened by the Coleshill attack. We managed to restrict Coleshill to attempts from outside the box and our defensive blocks were excellent and when they did get through Jake Bedford was in great form. We got a 3rd goal right at the end of the game from Dreniz Bala to confirm our dominance in the game.
