SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
League runners-Up Alvechurch lost at Coleshill Town thanks to an own goal and a Mykel Beckley strike.
Back in November Coleshill lost heavily to Alvechurch at Lye Meadow with the home team well in the title race and Coleshill struggling in 15th place some 20 points behind. At Pack Meadow Church had already secured the Runners-up spot but Coleshill were on an unbeaten run of eight games and pushing for 5th place. It could be said that Alvechurch took their eye off the ball with nothing at stake but Coleshill produced a team performance and deserved the victory although they were massively assisted by an own goal in the first half.
Alvechurch showed their quality in the opening minutes on the magnificent home surface and dictated play without seriously testing Town keeper Paul Hathaway. Coleshill were gifted the lead on 11 minutes. Reece Leek's cross was shepparded out for a corner but when the kick came in Paskin headed into his own net. In reply Spray shot straight at Hathaway and Smith headed wide from a corner. Reece Leek was having some joy down the right flank and his cross was met with a diving header from Mykel Beckley which went wide. Wright found himself clear on goal from a goal kick but Hathaway saved the striker's effort. An entertaining and even first half ended with Coleshill just with their noses in front.
The second half started in a similar vein as Alvechurch enjoyed the majority of possession but Coleshill's defence stood up tall and restricted the efforts on goal. Coleshill increased their lead in the 49th minute with a fine goal. Reece Leek went on a run from the half way line and after going past three defenders and reaching the bye line, he picked out Mykel Beckley at the far post who side footed past the keeper for 2-0. Coleshill worked tirelessly for each other and thwarted everything that Alvechurch threw at them. Beckley was through on a one-on-one with keeper Sargeant but the stopper was out quickly and saved at Beckley's feet. Church substitute Nadat cleverly turned in the box but saw his shot deflected for a corner. Then Spray had three efforts from inside the box blocked by determined defending. Shane Benjamin sent Reece Leek into the box but Sargeant saved well from the wingers shot. Smith put a header wide when unmarked as Alvechurch threw everything at Coleshill but again the defence held firm with particularly Tom Weale and Guy Clarke clearing time and time again. With time running out Gio Dainty had a great chance to secure the points as he pinched the ball on the half way line and ran into the box but with a defender on his heels he hesitated and the chance had gone. Coleshill held on to see the game out in an impressive win which secured a 5th place finish.

Church Sent Packing From Coleshill's Meadow
By Alan Deakin
An un-enjoyable afternoon at 5th placed Coleshill as Church fell to a fifth league defeat of the season.
Possibly Church’s worst performance since the opening day of the season.
Trailing to a first half own goal for the second time in three days, Church failed to muster their trademark second half dominance and laboured their way to a fifth league defeat of the season, leaving the 100 point mark now reliant on two wins in the final two games of the season.
It was the first time Church had failed to score in ten games, and only the fourth time they had failed to score in a league game this season.
Early chances for Williams and Spray in the first three minutes saw the former blaze over the bar from 25 yards and the latter forcing keeper Hathaway into a save that was initially spilled but gathered at the second attempt. And then on 11 minutes a Wright free kick found March unmarked at the far post but he headed tamely straight at Hathaway with a clear sight of goal. But it was a minute later that Paskin then showed the way to goal when he powered in a header from a corner – a Coleshill corner, to give the home side the lead.
Half chances were traded in the driving rain, and March was presented with another chance on the quarter hour when Spray threaded the ball through, forcing a last ditch defensive block tackle to divert the danger. On 28 Spray forced a smart full stretch save from Hathaway with an explosive effort from the edge of the box, but Coleshill missed a chance to go two up, on the break, on 36 when a break by Leek on the right and a curled cross to the far post found Beckley with a clear sight of goal, and a free header, but the front man failed to hit the target and trouble Sargeant.
Half Time: Coleshill 1 Alvechurch 0
Despite the fact that the sun was now shining. a second goal from the home side just five minutes into the second period delivered gloom to the already disgruntled Alvechurch camp. Leek went on another unchecked run down the right, and his dinked cross to Beckley this time found the Coleshill number ten with more composure as he stroked the ball in at the far post. Attacking substitutions followed with Nadat and Cresswell, and a few minutes later, Waite, entering the fray, but Church continued to look toothless in attack, and laboured in their approach play. There were glimmers, like the back-heel from Smith on 68 that was cleared off the line, with follow up volley from Spray hitting a defender in the face and ballooning wide, but in all honesty it never looked like coming. Coleshill were playing their part too, frustrating any Church initiative at will, including incurring four yellow cards on 76, 83, 84 and 86 minutes for technical (time-wasting) offences that added to the sense that Church were merely playing a bit part today.
