SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Jubilant Coleshill Town celebrated their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory away at Kenilworth. The crisis hit club finally found their way to the points with two goals from Tony Mathews.
A winning start, the first of the season, for new management duo Paul Johnson and Kevin Byrne.

Coleshill Town chairman Chris Davies is overseeing a huge rebuilding programme after recruiting his THIRD management team in 12 months. But it would be unfair to label the Packington Lane supremo as the new "Deadly Doug". In fact, Davies has been able to do very little about the turnover of managers at Pack Meadow.
The upheaval was sparked midway through last season when Martin Sockett and Martin Smith ended their three and a half year reign to take charge at VS Rugby. Coleshill player Loz Cairns was handed control of team affairs and guided Town to an encouraging fifth place finish in the Endsleigh Midland Combination Premier. But the club were left reeling in the summer when Cairns switched to league rivals Massey Ferguson, taking most of the Coleshill squad with him.
Mick Brookes and Mick Thurman then agreed to take on the huge task of building a new side from scratch. But Coleshill made a disastrous start to the 1998/99 term, losing nine games on the bounce. And Davies was soon scouring the non-league circuit for yet another management team. Thurman was forced to quit eight weeks into the campaign through personal reasons - but Brookes left under different circumstances. He offered to switch to a general manager's role to make way for a new gaffer following the poor start but didn't agree with the club's plans and resigned.
Davies handed the reigns to former Coleshill player Paul Johnson and experienced campaigner Kevin Byrne, charging them with the task of stabilising the playing set-up and steering the club away from the relegation zone. And the duo have made an immediate impact by halting Town's dismal run.
Davies said: "All the upheaval we've suffered has been pretty much out of our hands. Football wise, the last six months have devastating for us. It hasn't affected our social set-up but the playing side was virtually wiped out and we've had to start from scratch. Some of the players have left since Paul and Kevin have taken charge but not on bad terms. The've kept quite a few of the lads and given them a chance while also bringing in their own players and things have picked up quite a lot. We're not getting a hiding every week now. We're just aiming to finish mid-table to keep a bit of stability about the place."
Coleshill officials have drawn up a number of plans to take the club forward both on and off the pitch. But Davies is a realist and is refusing to look much further ahead than securing the club's place in the Premier Division this season.
We've got to look at pushing for promotion to the Interlink Alliance but I can't put a timescale on it after everything that's happened," he said. "We've got plenty of ideas in the pipeline though. We've got 40-50 kids attending a mini-soccer school on Saturday mornings and we're looking at laying down an artificial pitch and upgrading the changing room blocks. We're also weighing up the possibility of extending the clubhouse or even building a new one, although that would mean attracting a major investor".
