SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE

Goals from Jim Rosborough and Tony Malanaphy earned Coleshill a winning start to the new season against Solihull Borough. Coleshill made the running from the start but had to wait until three minutes before the interval for the reward of the opening goal. Trevor Burroughs was pulled down in the box by Solihull keeper Darryl Houghton and Rosborough converted the spot kick. Solihull were level within two minutes of the restart when Colin Cooke scored an own goal but Malanaphy struck the winner just past the hour. John Taylor did all of the work setting up the chance with a strong run from the halfway line with Malanaphy on hand to fire in a low winner.

SPORTS ARGUS WROTE
A penalty from Jim Rosborough broke the dead –lock for Coleshill three minutes before half time. Solihull goalie Darryl Houghton pulled down Trevor Burroughs in the box and Rosborough converted the spot kick. Coleshill had made the running from the start and Rosborough had been unlucky with a 12th minute free kick that just flew over. Solihull came close on 33 minutes when Derek Christopher was fouled and John Mitchell’s free kick caused anxiety in the Coleshill defence.
Half Time: Coleshill 1 v 0 Solihull Borough.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Super Start For Coleshill

Coleshill made an encouraging start to the new season in collecting the notable scalp of much-fancied Solihull Borough in their opening game at Pack Meadow. New manager Brian Jordan had made some drastic changes to the extent that there were only a few familiar faces on view from last season. One change, much regretted by the Coleshill fans, was to see their young keeper from last season - Darryl Houghton - keeping for the opposition on Saturday. Darryl was well liked at Coleshill - he won Player Of The Year - and his departure was certainly a sad blow for the team. In spite of it, it was apparent from early on that Coleshill were equal to their opponents. There were a number of crunching tackles from either side and a few players on each side were lucky to be facing such a lenient referee. Coleshill had the best of the early exchanges with forward Trevor Burroughs going close to beating Houghton while John Mitchell hinted at all sorts of problems at the other end. More chances arrived at either end. Colin Cooke set up Tony Malanaphy to go close and Darrel Christopher went close for the Borough before the deadlock was broken three minutes before the interval when Burroughs was brought down in the area and Rosborough made no mistake from the ensuing spot-kick. Solihull came back into the game in the second half and got on level terms when Cooke sadly notched an own goal after an otherwise enterprising performance. But the game still swung in Coleshill's favour and with 20 minutes to go they sealed a very impressive victory. John Taylor caught the Solihull defence square just past the half way line. He raced through to goal with the defenders desperately trying to catch him and crossed to Malanaphy to slide the ball home against the up-right. A fine win for Coleshill.

SOLIHULL NEWS WROTE
Hill Too Much For Borough

Hopefully Solihull Borough did not start the season as they mean to go on as they crashed 2-1 to Coleshill Town. Fortunately not much can be read into the first game as teams have to settle down and judging by Borough's midfield, this is a good thing. It was here that they were most suspect with Easton Shaw, Alan Ollis and Carl Smith coming off second best in many exchanges. Before kick off one minute's silence was observed in memory of Mr Harry Davies, Chairman of Coleshill, who died only days before the start of the new season. He would have been proud of the team who battled for him without reward until the stroke of half time. At this point Trevor Burroughs, Coleshill's speedy winger, outpaced Mark Hodges in the box and was brought down by Darryl Houghton's dive at his feet. Houghton, a keeper at Coleshill last season, got both hands to Jimmy Rosborough's spot kick but failed to force it round the post. Earlier chances for both sides came from direct free-kicks around the penalty area but Rosborough for Coleshill and Borough's John Mitchell both shot over on more than one occasion. Spontaneous shots and headers were inaccurate all round, except for a shot from Borough's Oliver Latchford which cannoned off the body of Tye, Houghton's replacement. Overall, Houghton did look the better keeper but had the most to do. From the re-start Borough looked sharper up front as more men pushed forward. After ten minutes of pressure Coleshill full-back Colin Cooke made the ultimate error as he passed back to Tye and the ball went in the net. Unfortunately Borough failed to take advantage of this gift to get back into the game. Ian Mitchell replaced Ollis in mid-field but could not stop the winning goal. Captain John Taylor caught Borough on the break to pass to Tony Malanaphy at the far post, It was a goal which always seemed likely as Stuart Randle pushed way forward out of his full back position, leaving a hole in the defence. Shortly afterwards the manager Ralph Punscheon replaced him with the more experienced Tony Billingham. In the last 15 minutes Borough were on top as they pressed for an equaliser but were unable to penetrate the Coleshill defence. Even with the last kick of the game, captain Clive Boxall won a corner which was loose in the penalty area when the ref blew for time.

*Tony Malanaphy scored on his debut!
