SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE

Northfield struck in the 31st minute when Hylton crossed a lovely ball for Bates to head against the crossbar and Bennett following up, headed home. Ten minutes later Bennett got his second with a great solo effort. Although Northfield were still on top throughout the second half, they only scored once, Moody finding the net.

SPORTS ARGUS WROTE
Both teams were wary of each other on the unaccustomed greasy surface in the opening exchanges. Walker in the Northfield goal was twice in action in the first ten minutes saving shots from Hickman and Cockerill. Northfield with some neat inter-passing between Hylton, Bennett and Bates saw the latter hit his shot over the bar from 18 yards when well placed. In the 31st minute Northfield took the lead when goalkeeper Walker's long kick found Hylton who took the ball to the byeline before crossing into the centre to Bates who headed the ball onto the cross-bar and Bennett, following up, headed into the net. In the 40th minute Northfield increased their lead when Bennett strolled through the Coleshill defence, taking a lovely pass from Hylton in his stride, before coolly placing the ball wide of goalkeeper Lillis.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Coleshill Collapse

The most apt description of Coleshill's performance against league leaders Northfield Town was that it was appropriate to the weather conditions - which was dismal writes Derek Gordon. The home side on the other hand turned in a polished performance which was an almost clinical object lesson in how to deal with opponents who were not up to their standard. Even so, the best chance of the opening exchanges fell to the visitors when the Northfield keeper, Ron Walker, had to come dashing out of his area as Coleshill forwards Malcolm Teeling and John Taylor broke through together onto a loose ball. For a few seconds, the three players all fought for possession, but the keeper just managed to kick the ball out of play. Coleshill midfielder Brad Russell picked up the resultant throw in and was unlucky to see his well struck volley take a last second deflection over the line for a corner. The game looked to be fairly even in midfield, but Northfield's first goal came exactly on the half hour, and resulted from excellent team work between their three front runners. Centre-forward Alan Hulton supplied a cross from the left which Warren Bates volleyed against the cross-bar, only for Peter Bennett to arrive and supply the finishing header. The second goal came seven minutes later, again from Bennett when he latched on to defensive error, which left him with an apparently easy chance in front of an open goal. All credit to the player, because these chances are never as easy as they look. The same Bennett finally wrapped up the game for Northfield in the 71st minute when, after a brilliant run which he began in his own half, he unselfishly squared up for substitute Adrian Moody to score the third and final goal. In the end Northfield ran out worthy winners, but for Coleshill it's back to the drawing board.
Man Of The Match: Brad Russell.
