On a miserable drizzly night Coleshill had the job done by half time as the went to the break three goals to the good. It wasn't that they had outclassed the home team, they just took their chances when they came and were able to cruise the whole of the second half. The encouraging part was that new signings Daniel Campbell, Chris Sterling and Corey Currithers all started the game and fitted in well and Rehmane Gordon made a late debut after impressing for the Under 21's.
Coleshill so nearly took the lead in the first few minutes when Chris Sterling chased a long ball and beat the home keeper to it but was fouled just outside the box. The home keeper was booked for the foul and this was to prove fatal later on. Sphinx contributed to an end to end game and should have taken the lead but for Paul Hathaway as he continued his impressive form and saved well from No8. It was Town that broke the deadlock on 21 minutes when a powerful run and cross by Reece Leek was deflected into the net. The announcer called the goal for Giovanni Dainty but it could well have come off a defender. Sphinx again had chances to score but a peach of a goal increased the Coleshill advantage on 27 minutes. Corey Currithers did really well to win the ball just inside his own half and he split the defence with a pass with the outside of his foot and Daniel Campbell raced on to it, rounded the keeper and stroked into an empty net. No11, No6 and No9 all had chances to reduce the deficit but a minute before half time Coleshill scored again. Andre Gonzales and Reece Leek combined well down the right wing and Reece's cross was slid in at the far post by Chris Sterling. That's all three new players involved in the goals!
With the game won Coleshill's pace dropped a little but the home side kept plugging away with just pride at stake. Simeon Cobourne was introduced from the bench and was immediately in the action. He was on the end of a Campbell through ball and got there before the keeper and down he went, penalty and a second yellow card for the home keeper. Cobourne took the spot kick himself but couldn't beat the stand-in keeper as his effort hit the outside of the post. Sphinx still had chances but it just wasn't their night and on 85 minutes it was 4-0. Cobourne was involved again but when his run into the box was blocked he laid the ball back to Josh Quaynor who hit a sweet cross that Giovanni Dainty knocked into the net with a diving header. Rehmane Gordon almost got a debut goal but his effort was pushed over the bar, then No9 chipped the ball over Hathaway only to see his effort hit the bar, which just about summed up Sphinx's night. Cobourne got the goal that his efforts deserved in the last minute when he stroked home a Josh Quaynor through ball. There was still time for No9 to be denied by Hathaway yet again as he stood tall, the shot hitting his chest then the Coleshill stopper saved a No11 shot at the foot of the post.
A great result although a bit flattering. Hinckley now in the next round. Coleshill have got to the Semi-Final of this competition twice but have never made it to the Final, is this their year?
