SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town and Sporting Khalsa played out a thriller at Pack Meadow before sharing the spoils in a 3-3 draw. Dean Rathbone, Reece Leek and Mykel Beckley were on target for the league's runners up while a Simeon Townsend goal and a Tony Clarke double made up the visitors' tally.
REPORT
Up until Tuesday night this was going to be a massive game for both sides. It could have been the decider for the Runners Up spot but Coleshill's win at Highgate meant they couldn't be caught for second place and Sporting's win the same night meant they were guaranteed third place.
So now with nothing on the game it would be a dull, end of season boring game. Well no, six goals and a penalty save meant another 100 plus crowd saw a very entertaining game.
It was the Dean Rathbone show in the first few minutes as Town's leading scorer led the visitors defence a merry dance. Rathbone made space in the box but scuffed his shot before he found the net on 8 minutes with an identical move but this time his left foot shot found the back of the net, that's 26 for the season. Minutes later Rathbone's shot came back off the bar. Sporting came much more in to the game after Coleshill's dominant start, Rob Evans' headed clearance went over his own bar before Khalsa equalised on 34 minutes. Tony Clarke, making his debut (how can that happen on the last game of the season) looked to have been closed down but he managed to bend the ball round the home defence and into the corner of the net. Sporting then were awarded a penalty much to the home sides surprise. Ceesay's shot was blocked by Rob Evans, the referee judged that he had used an arm, and pointed to the spot. Sporting's leading score David Meese stepped up and with 35 goals to his tally he would surely convert, but captain Paul Hathaway saved the spot kick as he has done on many an occasion in his 213 appearances. The game continued at pace, end to end but on the stroke of half time the visitors took the lead. A great cross from Carlo Franco found Townsend at the far post who out-muscled the defence and headed into the net.
Khalsa started the second half in the ascendancy. Townsend shot wide, Clarke's effort was deflected for a corner and Kasiama's goalbound shot was headed clear by Danny Tymon. But it was Coleshill who scored next on 56 minutes. Tom Weale combined with Dean Rathbone and his pin-point ball to Reece Leek was met with a powerful shot that arrowed into the net. Some lovely flowing football then followed from the home team and it was no surprise when they scored again on 67 minutes. Tom Weale fed Reece Leek wide right and as the cross came in Weale's step-over caught out the visitors defence leaving Mykel Beckley with clear sight of goal and he made no mistake. Hathaway saved from Kasiama before Sporting levelled the scores at 3-3 on 79 minutes. Clarke chased a through ball and Hathaway came out but hesitated allowing Clarke the chance to cleverly lobb the ball over the keeper and into the net. Both sides had chances to secure a winner in the remaining ten minutes but a draw overall was a fair result and both sides can be happy with the result and how their seasons have gone.
