MATCH REPORT
By Craig Hamilton

In the first minute the Students won the call in midfield and some nice play down their left forced the first corner of the game but Coleshill defended well and cleared. Coleshill started to get into the game and a ball over the Uni defence found Reece Leek but his heavy touch saw the ball run out of play, then a right wing free kick was cleared at the near post by the Uni defence.

It's was not all going Coleshill's way as a through ball to Aromalaran saw him cross low into the six yard box but was cleared for a corner which was again cleared easily. Rob Evans then won the ball for Coleshill and played a ball over the Uni defence for Matt Gardner to run onto but King in the Uni goal came out to smother the ball.

The play was now end to end play and good build up play by Uni saw the ball played to the feet of Boachie who turned and shot from 20 yards but saw his shot skim the top of the bar. Coleshill then went close as Ryan Edmunds knocked the ball past the left back into the area but his shot went wide of near post. This spurred on Coleshill and they had several chances to score but Uni defended well.

Loughborough then had a chance themselves as Boachie ran clear on goal but Paul Hathaway saved at his feet. Coleshill then gained the advantage as a mix up in defence saw the ball fall to Dean Rathbone who chipped the ball over the centre half to Ryan Edmunds who fired the ball into the net from 18 yards 1-0, 33 minutes. Then a one two between Dean Rathbone and Ryan Edmunds saw the ball flash across the six yard box and cleared but Coleshill win the ball back and a low cross was slid into the net by Dean Rathbone from close range 2-0, 35 minutes gone.

The game was played at a good pace and both sides had chances to score. First Matt Gardner headed over for Coleshill and then Moran fired over for Uni but the half finished with Coleshill on top 2-0.

Coleshill started the second half on the front foot but failed to make a corner count and then the Students danger man Boachie turned in the area but saw his shot blocked. Then a Dean Rathbone free kick was well saved by King in the Uni goal and Matt Gardner followed up to score but was flagged off side. Ryan Edmunds then intercepted a pass on the halfway line looked up and tried a "Beckham" but saw his chip land on the top of the net.

The game saw a string of free kicks from both sides break up the flow of play. Both sides still had chances but the game was wrapped up for Coleshill when a long ball was chased by Reece Leek but the keeper got to the ball first but saw his clearance hit Reece Leek on the back and fall to the feet of Gio Dainty to side foot into the empty net 3-0 86 minutes.

Some good football played by both sides but Coleshill proved too good for the University on the day.

LOUGHBOROUGH ECHO WROTE
Students Yet To Find Their Feet Against Experienced Rivals

THE Students had a tough opening fixture at the home of last season’s runner-up Coleshill Town and couldn’t have too many complaints about a 3-0 loss.

Coleshill are an experienced side and have been together for a few seasons now whilst the Uni side were forced into making changes from the side that had gone out the FA Cup the previous week and included a much changed back four and it showed.

It will probably be a few weeks before Karl Brenan can field a settled side as players slowly return to the campus from various activities such as vacations and placements, plus there are a few ‘Fresher’s in the side finding out what life is like at this level of football.

There wasn’t a lot to choose between the sides in the opening half an hour although Jake King in the Students goal had to be alert when coming out to make a superb save at the feet of a Coleshill forward.

Shortly afterwards the Students went close when the ever alert Joe Boachie fired a rasper of a shot that hit the top of the bar with the ‘keeper well beaten and Boachie was then denied by the home ‘keeper when he raced through only to see his effort well blocked. In between Coleshill should have scored when they were through clear on goal but the shot was pulled wide.

In the space of five minutes the Scholars hopes were all but ended as they conceded two goals.

The first came about when the inexperience in the Students defence showed and the ball was only partially cleared allowing the home side to take advantage and set up a chance for Ryan Edmunds to blast the ball home from the edge of the box.

That inexperience was even more evident as the Uni appealed for an offside decision that was never going to be given and they were all over the place as Rathbone rolled the ball into the net.

There was still time for Boachie to send another good effort just over the top but on a G3 pitch and two goals adrift at halftime it wasn’t turning out to be what the Uni had hoped for from the first League game of the season.

However, credit to them for making a far better fist of things in the second half when they matched Coleshill for long periods of the game but in fairness it was the brilliance of ‘keeper Jake King that kept them in the game as he pulled off two superb saves midway through the half, one in fact a double save following a rocket of a free kick that he did well to keep out and he deserved the plaudits from the onlookers.

The final goal came in the closing minutes and was a result of the Students own poor play. Taking a free kick which should have been put into the opposition box they chose to play across the field and the ball was intercepted. A catalogue of errors followed allowing Dainty to fire home from just inside the penalty area.

The Students, naturally, are a very young side and will need time to adjust to football at this level but on the other hand Coleshill will surely be one of the stronger sides in the division so it was a lesson for the learning.
