On a dull damp Monday evening in front of a respectable crowd of 112 ( given the conditions, holiday period and night of the week), the hosts took on newly promoted side South Mormanton reeling from their 6-1 defeat at Westfields two days earlier. Against a side missing midfielder Dean Rathbone and full back Anton Astley from the starting eleven that beat Loughborough University 2-0 on Saturday, it was the visitors who started best getting the better of the early midfield exchanges.
After 6 minutes Joe Halsall won the ball from a tackle, he passed the ball last week’s Man of the Match Ryan Edmunds whose pace beat the full back enabling him to put in an excellent cross that was too quick for the keeper and just in front of Matt Gardner. This forced centre back Dominic Allen to play the ball but his despairing contact saw the ball fly into the net for the home side to take a 1-0 lead.
The away side reacted immediately and for the next fifteen minutes put in a series of attacks and counter-attacks that brought out the best of the Coleshill midfield and the back four. Shane Newton beat Jorna Moulton but the full back turned quickly and put in a superb tackle that went out for a throw in. On 10 and 13 minutes the visitors had two accurate corner kicks , the first defended by Matt Gardner and the second by Jorna Moulton and Danny Tymon. On 15 minutes good work in the middle by Joe Cole led to a free kick taken by Reece Leek. Rob Evans got good contact with his header but is was easily saved by keeper Charlie Mansfield. South Normanton will get goals on the break this season by getting the ball to number ten and Man of the Match Luke Crosby but on this occasion his header was cleared off the line by Joe Cole. Then almost immediately another counter attack saw Coleshill keeper Hathaway take a good cross in the air from winger Shane Newton.
On 20 minutes some good interplay by Reece Leek and Joe Halsall enable Matt Gardner to get off a shot but it went wide of Mansfield’s right hand post. Once again the ball was delivered to Luke Crosby ( a big centre forward who seemed to require the attention of two or three Coleshill defenders whenever he got possession) who put Jack O’Brien in space only for the midfielder to sky his shot well over the bar.
On 23 minutes some pressure down the left hand side by Joe Halsall forced a throw in 18 yards out and required a desperate lunge on Jorna Moulton by full back Sam Kellogg to deny the hard working Reece Leek a shot. The resulting free kick from 20 yards by Ryan Edmunds was saved by the visiting keeper who launched another counter attack by Lee Fell and Luke Crosby, defended by the home team. Later, a run down the right wing by Reece leek was foiled by paceman Abou Sylla and Leek’s counter tackle was deemed high resulting in the first of five yellow cards issued by the referee.
Coleshill then put consistent pressure on the visitors up until just before the half time whistle with a series of good attacks that resulted in the home side doubling their lead. Between 33 and 40 minutes Ryan Edmunson’s shot was saved by the keeper, good work by Matt Gardener forced an unproductive corner; and interplay by Joe Cole, Gio Dainty and Matt Gardner gave Reece Leek space to shoot but his effort went over the bar. Finally, Gio Dainty got the ball to Reece Leek on the right whose clever chip over the defence put Danny Tymon 6 yards in front of goal. Despite pressure from the defenders, Tymon’s shot beat Mansfield to give Town a 2-0 cushion.
As half time approached South Normanton rallied once again with strong counter attacking football. Joe Cole was forced to concede a corner to deny Sylla. From the corner Crosby put a free header wide, then in the next attack Crosby required persistent attention from Rob Evans and Jesse Race who prevented a shot on target. Right on the half time whistle Man of the Match Joe Halsall cleared a shot from Lee Fell off the line preserving Coleshill’s half time 2-0 lead.

After 50 minutes shots by Matt Gardner, Ryan Edmunds and Reece leak were all off target or saved by the keeper. On 55 minutes Jorna Moulton received Coleshill’s second caution after a foul on Sylla. The resulting free kick from Jack O’Brien was plucked out of the air by the ever vigilant Captain Paul Hathaway, unbeaten this season to date. Two corners swiftly followed. The first when Joe Cole conceded to prevent a cross from the ever dangerous Sylla and the second by the ever reliable Rob Evans to deny Crosby.
Matt Gardner was substituted on 58 minutes by Liam Molesworth and for the visitors Shane Newton was replaced by Tom Leighton. The final third of the match became an intense and bad tempered affair as both sides committed fouls during a series clumsy tackles. Crosby was booked for a clip against Moulton. On 65 minutes Moulton made a crucial interception to deny O’Brien an opportunity and a cross at the other end by Dainty was taken off Leek’s head by the South Normanton keeper before being substituted for Brett Fellows (75 minutes). After Reece Leek’s hard work all game he sustained a knock and was subsequently replaced by Corrie Currithers on 80 minutes. Danny Tymon then made an important clearance following a good tackle on Crosby by Joe Cole. The visitors then substituted Frazer Kirk with Jack Dyson.
The last ten minutes was a frantic affair that had both sets of supporters concerned. Liam Molesworth earned a corner which was easily cleared then a cross by Ryan Edmunds was headed clear just before Rob Evans could get his head to the ball. A long mazy run down the right, complete with his now trade mark “double shuffle” turn, ended with the ball going over the goal line before Edmonds could cross the ball, and at the other end a hurried clearance by Hathaway caused concern before the keeper managed to scramble away the resulting threat. In what seemed like ten minutes of added time, substitute Tyson was booked for a foul on the ever industrious Halsall, and Joe Cole continued to do fine work in denying Fell and O’Brien. Strzyweski was replaced by Jaieola for the visitors and a shot by Tyson was touched over the bar by Hathaway. In the last action of the game Sylla was booked for a foul on Tymon and to the relief of the home fans the referee blew the final whistle, leaving Coleshill at the top of the table and South Normanton in bottom spot.

South Normanton were playing some good football but were guilty of needing one pass too many as they approached the Coleshill penalty area. In the 20th minute, Paul Hathaway, the Coleshill keeper, cannoned a clearance off Lee Fell, fortunately rebounding safe. A free-kick for the home side was on target from Edmunds but straight into the arms of Mansfield. Crosby continued to be a thorn in the side of the Coleshill defence, and clever footwork created an opening but the finish was weak. In the 35th minute, Hathaway raced off his line to clear, found Newton just inside the Coleshill half, and his first-time shot was gathered by the backpedalling keeper. In the 39th minute, a shot on the turn from Reece Leek just cleared the South Normanton bar. However, Leek turned creator second later, playing the ball into the path of Danny Tymon who shot low past Mansfield. South Normanton should have pulled a goal back a minute later but Fell was off target when given a free-header in front of goal. The visitors kept pushing and Crosby flashed a shot across the face of the goal. In stoppage time, Abou Sylla ran at the Coleshill defence, found space and curled a shot narrowly over the bar.
Three minutes into the second half, Coleshill were close to a third when a cross from Tymon was headed past his own post by Mark Strzyweski. Edmunds was off target for Coleshill and Leek hit the side-netting as the home side looked to put the game to bed. A free-kick from the right found the head of Newton who headed over as South Normanton continued to waste chances. The game continued with South Normanton having the bulk of possession without making the breakthrough. Five minutes from time Jack O’Brien attempted to chip Hathaway with the keeper gathering just under the bar. Two minutes into time added on, a well hit volley from Jack Tyson skimmed the Coleshill bar which summed up the night for South Normanton.
Not a lot to choose between the two sides with an unfortunate own goal and a piece of real quality being the difference.
