SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Khalsa Enjoying The Perks To Lift Themselves Up

Defender Michael Perks headed Sporting Khalsa to a dramatic 3-2 victory over league leaders Coleshill Town. But he left it late, grabbing his match winner in the fifth minute of injury time. The visitors went into this game as the league's form side having won seven games on the bounce. And they took the lead midway through the first half when Kyle Brady slotted home from 15 yards. But Coleshill hit back at the start of the second half with two goals in three minutes. Reece Leek headed in a 47th minute equaliser before Gio Dainty steered a low cross over the line to put the Colemen in command. Khalsa skipper Tes Robinson levelled with a header 15 minutes from time, with Perks bagging the winner deep in injury time to lift the Black Country side up to third in the table.

MATCH REPORT
Storm Brian definitely had an effect on this game, some seriously strong winds but despite that it was an entertaining game between the two sides that finished 2nd and 3rd last season and believe they can do better this year.

Coleshill have never beaten Sporting in the league so they knew they had a tough game on their hands but went about the task well and were unlucky to be a goal down by half time. There had been little goalmouth action but Khalsa took the lead on 23 minutes when a Rob Evans clearance was blocked and the ball fell kindly to Brady in oceans of space. The striker had time to pick his spot and bent the ball left footed round keeper Paul Hathaway into the net. Brady and Hathaway clashed shortly afterwards and on another day Coleshill's captain could have gone for an early shower. Joe Halsall volleyed wide before the visiting keeper Arnold was adjudged to have picked up a back-pass which looked harsh. Reece Leek took the free kick passing to Jordan Nadat but his shot was blocked inside a packed 18 yard box. A Ryan Edmunds corner was met by Rob Evans at the near post but his volley was cleared off the line.

If Coleshill were unfortunate to be behind, they soon put things right with two quick second half goals. On 47 minutes a Ryan Edmunds corner was half cleared but found Reece Leek unmarked 10 yards from goal and his looping header went over the keeper and into the net. On 52 minutes Coleshill were in front. Reece Leek released Jordan Nadat wide right of the box but his powerful right foot cross/shot was gleefully bundled into the net at the far post by Gio Dainty. What had been a cagey game became more open. Another Ryan Edmunds corner was back heeled at the near post by Rob Evans, the goal bound effort cleared off the line, Paul Hathaway punched clear a Kinch cross/shot and then a Meese shot hit a hand but the free kick from Bannister went well over. On 75 minutes Sporting were back in the game as their centre backs combined to get the equaliser. A deep corner was headed back across goal by Boothe and captain Tesfa Robinson headed into the net. A Ryan Edmunds cross was deflected goalward but Arnold did well to save at the near post, Jordan Nadat crossed into the box but the flying Joe Halsall's headed went wide and then Nadat's shot was blocked but he had runners either side that would have been a better option. Paul Hathaway saved from Perks then tipped a shot from Nesbett over the bar as the clock ticked into time added on. Both sides would have settled for a draw but in the 5th minute of injury time Paul Hathaway came to claim a deep corner but Perks got to the ball first and his powerful header hit the back of the net for a late, late winner.

Coleshill still maintained top spot as second placed Bromsgrove lost heavily at Shepshed and Worcester were involved in the FA Vase but Sporting Khalsa closed the gap.

A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
A match Report taken from the Sporting Khalsa web site

A last-gasp winner by Mike Perks earned Khalsa three-points in a ding-dong battle between the top and fourth placed sides in the Midland Football League.
Khalsa were ahead and then trailed, coming back to clinch an unlikely three points against the league leaders.
The early exchanges were typical of a high pressure match on an artificial surface, the swirling wind doing little to help either side play football.
It was Khalsa who had the best of the openings, Kyle Brady and Craig Bannister had half chances for the visitors on 11 and 15 minutes respectively.
And it was Brady who put Ian Rowe’s side ahead on 25 minutes, capitalising on a fortuitous deflection to shoot past Paul Hathaway.
It took a great block by Tes Robinson to prevent Rob Evans from equalising from a corner right on the stroke of half time.
But within minutes of the restart, Coleshill were ahead. Reece Leek and Gio Dainty bagged opportunistic goals within three minutes of each other.
Khalsa dragged themselves back into the game on 75 minutes, Shawn Boothe heading back a corner to Robinson who made no mistake to equalise.
With the game going into injury time and a hard-fought draw looking likely to be what would probably have been a fair result, Hathaway produced a good save to tip over Marvin Nisbett’s effort from the edge of the area.
But from the resulting corner, Perks popped up at the far post to spark jubilant celebrations on the Khalsa bench and earn Khalsa the three points.
