SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Hathaway The Hero As Town Go Through

Coleshill Town won a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Newcastle Benfield to book their place in the last 16 of the FA Vase. The two sides drew in the North East last weekend and nothing could separate them again as it ended 1-1 after 120 minutes. Luke Carr looked to have won the game in injury time for the visitors, only for Luke Edwards to level with the final shot of the match. The tie was still locked at 1-1 after extra time and it was left to Coleshill keeper Paul Hathaway to take centre stage, scoring from the spot and then saving two of Benfield's kicks as the Colemen won through 4-2 on penalties.

THE NON LEAGUE PAPER WROTE
Keeper Hathaway Is The Colemen's Hero

Coleshill town keeper Paul Hathaway became the man of the moment as he saved two penalties and scored one in a dramatic shoot-out to ensure the Colemen progressed to the next round. After a total of 240 minutes of play, nothing could separate them from Newcastle Benfield as Coleshill fought back in this dramatic replay. The home side stormed to victory in a penalty shoot-out which ended 4-2 and saw keeper Hathaway score their third, before saving the next two Newcastle spot kicks. In what was a cagey affair, neither team looked like they were going to break the deadlock, as chances came and went at both ends. Luke Carr did grab the lead for Newcastle in the second minute of added time and that looked as though it was enough to win the tie. But with just seconds remaining, Luke Edwards headed home the Colemen's equaliser to force the game into extra time. It was the team from the North East who were the stronger in the extra 30 minutes, but their Midland Football League hosts held firm and booked their place in the last 16 thanks to keeper Hathaway's heroics in the shoot-out. Coleshill will now take on Bracknell Town in the Fifth Round.

MATCH REPORT
240 minutes of blood and guts football couldn't separate these two sides and so to penalties. Coleshill have now progressed in the League Cup, Birmingham Senior Cup and the FA Vase via penalty shoot outs and haven't missed a kick yet.

After the game on Benfield's heavy pitch last week Coleshill were expected to take the initiative on Pack Meadow's magnificent surface but is was the travelling side that settled early and played some impressive football. Slaughter volleyed just wide. Joel Grandison's shot was pushed out for a corner by Grainger and Rob Evans volleyed well over from the resulting kick. Scorgie had a great chance but headed wide at the back post. Paul Hathaway showed us a glimpse of what was to come as he magnificently took a cross one handed. Brayson headed over the bar then Orrell took advantage of a defensive slip but saw his vicious shot well saved by Hathaway, Carr's shot was deflected for a corner off Rob Evans and Hathaway punched away a header from McCarthy. Town hit back through a shot by Ryan Edmunds that Grainger saved well, Luke Edwards sent Reece Leek away with a pass with the outside of his foot and Joel Grandison headed Leek's cross wide. The half ended goalless but Benfield were the better side and Coleshill needed to lift their game.

A much more even half started with Coleshill in the ascendancy. A great ball into the box was headed out for a corner by McEvoy who had an excellent game throughout. Carr missed a header at the far post and Ryan Edmunds shot straight at the keeper then Danny Tymon fed Reece Leek whose left foot shot was saved at the foot of the post by Grainger, then the visiting keeper punched away a shot from Ryan Edmunds. Joel Grandison made yards before releasing Ryan Edmunds but his hard low shot went narrowly past the far post. Home keeper Paul Hathaway saved from Orrell with his feet then Benfield cut open the Town defence but Carr shot well over the bar from a great position. Extra time was looming but with 90 minutes up Carr cut across the 18 yard box from right to left, shot left footed and with the aid of a slight deflection found the far corner of the net. Carr was mobbed by his team mates as surely he had won the game for the visitors. This Coleshill team has many qualities but their best one is that "they never give up." Minutes later Ryan Edmunds sent in a peach of a cross and there was Luke Edwards to plant a powerful header in off the far post 1-1. The Referee barely had time to restart the game and the whistle blew for extra time.

Grainger saw yellow for a challenge on Reece Leek right at the edge of the box but the first 15 minutes past with little action. The last quarter saw shots from Slaughter and Wrightson blocked, McEvoy's shot deflected for a corner and Scorgie head wide but the best chance fell to Liam Molesworth as he had sight of goal when Grainger and McEvoy collided but he rushed his shot and saw it scrape the far post. And so to penalties.

Liam Molesworth took the first and was successful, Brayson scored and so did Reece Leek making it 2-1 to Coleshill. Slaughter levelled before keeper and captain Paul Hathaway scored Town's third, then saved from Hailes, 3-2. Rob Evans scored No4 and Hathaway saved from Wrightson, 4-2 and through to Round 5 where Town will meet Bracknell Town at Pack Meadow on 3rd February.

Wow what a tie! Sad that someone had to lose after a gigantic struggle but the show goes on!

A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
A match report taken from Newcastle Benfield web site

A brilliant individual goal from Luke Carr was not enough for Benfield to progress through to the last 16 of the FA Vase

The Lions were hit with a cruel last minute equaliser forcing the game to extra time whereupon Coleshill progressed through to Next Round.

After 240 minutes of football, two teams from the same level in the football pyramid, from almost 200 miles apart, simply could not be separated, meaning that the only possible way to find a winner was by the lottery of kicks from the penalty mark. Sadly, it was a broken-hearted Benfield squad that bowed out, having seen Coleshill convert all 4 of theirs and both Joe Hailes and Kieran Wrightson saw both of their efforts saved by home keeper Paul Hathaway.

The team from the sleepy, leafy lanes of affluent Warwickshire now move on to host Bracknell Town in the last 16, while for Benfield there is the chance for sombre reflection on the miniscule, yet unforgiving margins between success and failure.

Similar to the first game the week before, the first half of this contest saw Benfield on the front foot for most of the opening period. The 4G surface at bucolic Pack Meadow suited The Lions’ slick, incisive passing game, while the home team relied more on long ball tactics, primarily by utilising the prodigious kicking of Hathaway to switch play from one end to the other in the shortest time possible. Despite the contrasting styles on display, the common factor was a lack of real chances in both goalmouths. There were close shaves and hairy moments, but until Jake Orrell’s superb turn and testing low shot that Hathaway did well to palm away in the 37th minute, neither keeper was called into action and so the score remained unsurprisingly blank at the break, even if in terms of possession, Benfield should have been at least two goals ahead.

The second half was a closer affair, punctuated with a myriad range of stoppages for injuries, post-foul lectures and the retrieval of match balls from the surrounding fields, though again chances were at a premium. A visibly tiring home side were being pushed back by visitors who sought vainly for an opener and it almost came with 10 minutes to go when Jake Orrell slid a ball across the area for the on-rushing Luke Carr. Agonisingly, he was on the stretch and could only steer his shot over the bar. However, there was still time for enough drama in Shakespeare’s home county for a five-act tragedy. On 94 minutes, Luke Carr found himself free on the left side of the box. His shot was firm, true and with the added benefit of a crucial deflection off a home defender. When it nestled in the bottom corner, past the grasp of the despairing Hathaway, it seemed as if the Lions had done it.

In the film Clockwise, John Cleese plays the uptight and obsessive head teacher Brian Stimpson who sums his philosophy on life up as “it’s not despair I hate. I can stand the despair. It’s the hope I can’t stand.” Never was this more apt than during this game. During the final seconds of injury time, Coleshill made one last desperate effort to rescue the game and, unbelievably, drew level. An inviting cross from the left by Ryan Edmunds was powerfully headed home, via the inside of the post, by the impressive Luke Edwards. It was a magnificently placed effort and no keeper in the world would have got near it. The final whistle, 30 seconds later, was drowned out by the cheers of the still celebrating home support.
Extra time, the same as last week, was tight and attritional, with the best and most significant chance falling to Coleshill, following a mix-up in the Benfield penalty area. It was missed and, so we went to penalties, with the devastating outcome mentioned before. Best of luck to Coleshill; they were spirited, worthy opponents who rode their luck, though Benfield will lose sleep over the chances blown over two legs to advance in the competition. Of course, there’s always next year.

Good luck to Coleshill in the next round.

Absolutely delighted with all the players and the support we had for the game, unfortunately it wasn’t to be this year but there is still a lot to play for this season. We are down and hurting but will be back at it again for Tuesday.
Special thanks to all the Newcastle Benfield fans 2 bus loads.
