MATCH REPORT
After several weeks of gruelling, battling and strength sapping games, Coleshill had this game wrapped up in the first few minutes and were able to relax and enjoy the match. This is not taking anything away from a very young Long Eaton side that played some lovely football, never gave up and deserved their goal right at the end but Town were in full flow and showed just why they are top of the league.
Coleshill took the lead as early as the third minute when Reece Leek challenged keeper Lowe on the edge of the box and the ball fell kindly to James Hicks who threaded the ball through the eye of a needle and into the net. On 6 minutes a ball into the box by Gio dainty was controlled by James Hicks then knocked left footed past keeper and defender into the net. The game was over as a contest on 8 minutes when Reece Leek made it three. A clever short free kick by Ryan Edmunds released Reece Leek into the box and he side-footed powerfully into the far corner of the net. There was then a time gap on the goal front but not on the action as Coleshill played some of their best football of the season and had many chances to increase the score, Reece Leek and Ryan Edmunds in particular. On 35 minutes a Ryan Edmunds cross was met by the head of Gio Dainty but Lowe made a good save only to see Joe Smith head home the rebound.
Half Time: Coleshill 4 v 0 United
Coleshill eased off understandably in the second half and Long Eaton made the most of the possession but when they did get sight of goal captain Paul Hathaway in the Town goal was determined to keep a clean sheet. James Hicks completed his hat-trick on 54 minutes as Reece Leek got to the bye line and saw his shot saved by Lowe but James Hicks was on hand to finish the move off from six yards. Paul Hathaway saved from Reid then punched away a cross by Thornton and then made an even better save from Scanlon as United made a game of it. On 77 minutes substitute Matt Gardner delicately lobbed the keeper from 20 yards for number six. Paul Hathaway saved from Duffy and Gio Dainty cleared a Reid header off the line. Under 21 star Ryan Meredith made ground down the right, cut inside and crossed to Matt Gardner who found space with a Cruyff turn and shot at goal but Lowe made a fine save. Goal number seven came on 83 minutes when a corner was cleared only as far as Gio Dainty. His shot was heading wide but Joe Smith diverted the ball goalward, wrong-footing keeper Lowe and finding the back of the net. Long Eaton finally got reward for their hard work as Reid powered into the box and slipped the ball past the advancing Hathaway. The Town captain was furious to concede late on as he had work so hard to keep a clean sheet.
Well done to M.O.M James Hicks for his hat-trick. James has been in and out of the side due to being cup-tied in the Vase but showed what he can do last night. Also well done to the two under 21's players James Medford and Ryan Meredith who got some valuable game time.
18 league games to go, 7 points clear at the top, although many of the chasing pack have games in hand.
