SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Midland Trio Sent Packing

There was disappointment for all three Midland Football League sides involved in the FA Vase with Coleshill Town, Bromsgrove Sporting and Stourport Swifts all crashing out in the fifth round. Coleshill's match with Bracknell Town went to extra time before the Berkshire side, who play their football in the Premier Division of the Hellenic League, ran out 4-2 winners. The visitors had the better of the first half but all they had to show for their efforts was a Seb Bowerman goal after just five minutes. Reece Leek crashed in an equaliser at the start of the second half and that was how it stayed to force the tie to extra time. Bracknell keeper Chris Grace then pulled off an excellent save to deny Ryan Edmunds as the Colemen looked to take a grip on the game and that was to prove vital with the visitors taking the lead moments later through Adam Cornell. Joe Grant added a third off the underside of the bar and, although Luke Edwards pulled one back, Bracknell made sure from the penalty spot in injury time when Bowerman bagged his second of the game.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER WROTE
Robins are Flying High

By Nick Reid
Bracknell Town joint manager Paul McGrotty was "ecstatic" as his team secured a tense victory at Coleshill Town to reach the FA Vase quarter finals. With the game at 1-1 at 90 minutes, the Berkshire boys needed extra-time to get past the high-flying Midland League Premier Division outfit, who reached the semi final of the Vase during last season's campaign. McGrotty told The NLP. "It's a nerve-racking way to win when we should have been three up after the first half. In the second half they were in the ascendancy and we were clinging on a bit, but we made a change to take it to them and go for them. It is always a worry when you don't take your chances and as it proved second half, we didn't start well and they equalised. Coleshill were then on top, but credit to the boys, they dug deep and we looked dangerous at the end of the game. The whole team stood out today, it is not fair to single individuals out but our goalie has pulled off a great save with the scores level and we go up two minutes later and score. We are just chuffed for them all and hopefully we can keep pushing now." Bracknell from the Hellenic League Premier Division, took the lead after five minutes through Seb Bowerman and dominated the first half, but they failed to take their chances. They were pegged back at the beginning of the second half when Reece Leek smashed home from close range for the Colemen. The game went to extra time and became cagey, with Robins keeper Chris Grace having to pull off a great save from Ryan Edmunds to keep the visitors in it on 100 minutes. Two minutes later, Bracknell sub Adam Cornell found space in the box and fired home to restore the away side's lead. Joe Grant then made it three for the Robins when the ball fell to his feet in the box and he smashed it in off the crossbar with seven minutes to go. Luke Edwards pulled a goal back for Coleshill with two minutes of the additional 30 remaining. But as the Colemen battled to equalise, Joe Grant was pulled down by home goalkeeper Paul Hathaway in the box. Bowerman converted the penalty to secure his second of the match, sending Bracknell through and breaking the hearts of their hosts. Coleshill Town manager Cameron Stuart said, "When we scored the equaliser I felt like we would go on and win it, but it wasn't to be. We are still in three cups and top of the league, so we must pick ourselves up and keep going forward."

MATCH REPORT

Coleshill were virtually at full strength as they looked to get into the Quarter Final of the FA Vase for the second year running. Liam Molesworth, holiday, James Hicks and Joe Smith cup-tied the only omissions.

The visitors also play on 3G so it was no surprise that they started well, so well that they took the lead with just five minutes on the clock. Keeper Grace punted forward, Bohane headed on leaving Bowerman free and the striker surprised everyone by shooting early and his rifle shot hit the net with home keeper Paul Hathaway not moving. Bowerman almost made it two but he just couldn't reach a Grant cross for a tap in. Bohane looked a mile off side but was allowed a free run at goal only to see his shot go wide of the post and Short headed a corner onto the bar. Little had been seen of Coleshill as an attacking force but they should have had a penalty when Reece Leek was pushed to the ground in an off the ball incident. Luke Edwards miss-hit a clearance over the bar, Gater headed over the bar and Paul Hathaway saved a shot from Grant with his feet as the visitors continued to squander chances which allowed Coleshill to start to get to grips with the game.

Coleshill started the second half much better Gio Dainty having a cross cleared off the line and Ryan Wynter heading over before equalising on 50 minutes when Reece Leek got behind the Robins defence from a Paul Hathaway punt and quickly shot under the keeper and into the net. Reece Leek shot straight at the keeper and Ryan winter volleyed wide but Bracknell almost regained the lead when Grant turned a Bowerman cross just the wrong side of the post. A great cross by Ryan Edmunds was just asking to be volleyed into the net but Jorna Moulton took a touch and the chance had gone. Rob Evans' through ball sliced open the Bracknell defence leaving Ryan Edmunds with a one-on-one with the keeper and you wouldn't want this opportunity to fall for anyone else but Edmunds seemed to be caught in two minds and ended up shooting straight at the keeper. Bracknell sub Cornell thought he had won the game but his effort was ruled off-side and so to extra time again.

With both sides tiring the added time became cagey. Ryan Edmunds goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner, Grant skipped past three defenders but saw his shot saved by Paul Hathaway and then the turning point. Ryan Edmunds and Joel Grandison combined down the right, the latter's cross finding Rob Evans in the box and his shot was heading for the net before keeper Grace dove full length to tip the ball round the post. Within two minutes Bracknell got their noses in front when Grant got to the bye line and Cornell bundled his cross into the net.

Just 15 minutes left to salvage the tie Coleshill went for broke but with time running out Bracknell increased the lead when Grant's left foot shot hit the roof of the net despite Hathaway getting a hand to it. It was Luke Edwards who got a last gasp equaliser in the last round and he was at it again as he headed home a Joel Grandison cross. In time added on Coleshill were in all out attack mode and Bennett broke clear made ground into the box and was pulled back by Town keeper Paul Hathaway, penalty. Seb Bowerman scored from the spot and that was it, Coleshill Town were out of the Vase after a brave effort.

Seb Bowerman gave the Robins the perfect start on six minutes when he raced onto Short’s flick on to fire low past the keeper. Bowerman came close again three minutes later, coming within inches of getting on the end of Joe Grant’s Cross. Bracknell threatened again when Bohane timed his run perfectly to get on the end of a through ball from McClurg, but the hosts keeper did enough to hold him up until a teammate could retreat and force Bohane to put his effort wide.

The Robins came close again on 25 minutes when Davies headed McClurg’s free kick back across the box to Joe Gater, but his volleyed effort crashed back off the crossbar. Shortly after the management team were forced into a change with Justin Clayton unable to carry on after picking up an injury, Carl Withers was the man to replace him.

Further chances fell to Grant and Bowerman before the break but despite the Robins dominance they went in at half time just the one goal ahead and were made to pay for their missed opportunities on 50 minutes, when Reece Leek latched onto a long ball over the Bracknell back line and slotted the ball past Grace to bring the Colemen level. This awoke the home supporters and the atmosphere inside Pack Meadow was turned up a notch as both sets of supporters exchanged chants, this fired the hosts up and Bracknell had to weather a nervy 15 minutes of pressure from the home side in which they wasted a couple of opportunities to take the lead, but credit to the lads they held firm and didn’t fold.
The game began to open up and on 72 minutes the Robins came close to re-taking the lead when Bowerman skipped past his man and crossed for Grant but his miss hit effort went agonisingly wide. The managers looked to exploit the tiring legs of the Colehill back line and replaced George Short with Adam Cornell. With full time approaching Cornell thought he’d found the winner after tucking away Bowerman’s cross but the celebrations were cut short by a dubious offside flag, with never side able to find a winner the game headed into extra time.

Neither side created any real opportunities in the early stages of the first half of extra time, but the game sprung to life 10 minutes in when Chris Grace dived full stretch to his right to superbly keep out a low effort that looked destined for the back of the net, from that the Robins broke up field and Bohane cut the ball back from the byline for Adam Cornell to side foot home to the Robins ahead and send the fans behind the goal into raptures. Shortly after the break Bracknell made their third and final change with Bennett replace TJ Bohane in attack.

As Coleshill went in search of an equaliser they left gaps in their midfield which Bracknell exploited when the ball was worked wide to Bowerman, he skipped past his man and pulled the ball back to Joe Grant on the edge of the 18 yard box, he created himself a yard of space and hit left footed rocket at goal which the keeper managed to get a touch to but couldn’t stop it flying into the top corner.

Coleshill again poured forward looking for a route back into the game and they got it with a few minutes remaining, a cross was flicked onto skipper Carl Davies into the back of his own net. The Colemen looked to try and force a replay and threw everyone expect the keeper forward, the robins won possession back on the edge of their own box and released Bennett who took the ball around the advancing keeper but was hauled back and referee James Oldham pointed to the spot. Seb Bowerman calmly sent the keeper the wrong way but there was nothing calm about the celebration that followed as both players and fans celebrated the club making it through to the FA Vase quarter-final, the furthest the club have made it in the competition. The full time whistle was greeted with a massive cheer from the travelling fans who had gathered by the tunnel to congratulate the players as they left the pitch.
