Colemen In Red Hot Form In Race For Title

Matty Gardner opened the scoring with a 34th minute header before the Colemen wrapped up the points with an emphatic second half display. MATCH REPORT
Following last weeks narrow win over 4th from bottom Haughmond, manager Cameron Stuart said he had no worries about his team raising their game against the bigger teams. Against 7th placed Rugby, Coleshill were on the ball from the start, worked tirelessly and in an all round team performance were well worthy of the win. With Danny Tymon returning from suspension, Coleshill were at full strength and had a very strong bench.

The game was played in horrendous conditions and the referee even stopped play at one point because he couldn't see due to a snow storm but both sides battled through the conditions gamely which resulted in a very entertaining game on a bitterly cold afternoon. Coleshill almost took a very early lead when keeper Cooper kicked the ball straight to Ryan Edmunds but his shot took a deflection and went for a corner, the first of many, and Matt Gardner almost headed in at the near post and Town had a good shout for a penalty for hand ball from corners. Despite Town's early pressure it was Rugby who came the closest to scoring when a bending shot from Wiggins-Thomas hit the corner of post and bar. The visitors had their best spell then and played some neat keep ball with little end product. Coleshill had the ball in the net when Exodus Geohaghon challenged with the keeper and Joe Smith tucked home but as happens so many times these days, the contact with the keeper was considered a foul. From another corner keeper Cooper brilliantly tipped over the bar a header from Joe Halsall and then Cooper pushed a shot from Matt Gardner onto the post but the Colemen's pressure finally told on 34 minutes when Joe Smith got to the bye line and his cross was met at the far post by Matt Gardner who headed down and into the net. Coleshill were dominant but as the break approached Kolodynski sent a dangerous cross along the six yard line, just needing a touch and home keeper Paul Hathaway had to be quick off his line to thwart Kolodynski from a Hendrie through ball.

Ryan Edmunds sent a free kick from 25 yards out not too far away from goal as Coleshill started in the ascendancy. Wiggins-Thomas shot wide before Coleshill increased the lead on 53 minutes. Joe Halsall broke up and move in mid-field and released Joe Smith down the right and his cross was swept into the net by Reece Leek. Coleshill's central mid-field pair break up so many of the oppositions attacks and this time it was Danny Tymon who then set up Matt Gardner who took a touch then sent a rocket shot into the net from 22 yards on 55 minutes. Wiggins-Thomas shrugged off Joe Cole's challenge but couldn't beat keeper Hathaway then Rugby keeper Cooper saved from Reece Leek but the game had lost it's edge and the action slowed down. Coleshill got their fourth on 79 minutes when Man Of The Match Joe Smith sent in another lovely cross that Gio Dainty volleyed into the net. Wiggins-Thomas cleverly chested the ball into his path but his shot went past the far post and when a sweeping move reached Wright at the far post his weak shot hardly bothered Hathaway which summed up Rugby's day.

Eleven League games to go, eleven cup finals, and they start with the visit to league leaders Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday night.
