SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Dominant Duo Show No Signs Of Letting Up
Leading Lights Coleshill Town and Bromsgrove Sporting tightened their grips on the promotion places. Coleshill, 4-0 winners at rivals Bromsgrove in mid-week, repeated that scoreline at home to AFC Wulfrunions. Matt Gardner separated the sides at half time with Joe Smith and Ryan Edmunds all but sealing the points just past the hour. Joe Halsall added a fourth late on.
MATCH REPORT
"We Always Win 4-0" chanted the healthy 132 crowd as Coleshill recorded their third 4-0 win in a row. Following superb performances against Rugby and Bromsgrove, this win was a bit more measured with the opposition putting up a good fight with some nice neat football, some dogged defending and a fine display by visiting keeper John Bateman.
Coleshill were almost at full strength again apart from Rob Evans who was replaced by Gio Dainty. Both teams started slowly but the football was good to watch on Pack Meadow's magnificent surface. Home keeper Paul Hathaway came out to catch a good cross and immediately sent Ryan Edmunds flying down the right wing with a quick throw out. Edmunds' dangerous cross was well gathered by Bateman. Andre Gonzales shot left footed over the bar. Bateman saved a shot from Reece Leek but in the next attack Leek's shot got past Bateman but not the last defender who cleared off the line only as far as Gio Dainty who shot hard and low across goal and Matt Gardner got the final touch to direct the ball into the net. 1-0 22 minutes. Reece Leek then hit the post with a left foot shot before Wulfs hit back, Joe Smith conceding a corner stopping a fine run by Webb and a dangerous header from Ray was sheparded clear by Exodus Geohaghan. Bateman saved from Leek again and Ryan Edmunds headed a Gio Dainty cross over the bar. Webb, the visitors most dangerous player, headed a cross into the side netting, Bateman saved from Ryan Edmunds and Tonks' cross/shot went not too far over the bar.
The format continued in the second half with Coleshill carving out the chances but Wulfs thwarting most of the attempts and Bateman clearing up when needed. It took to the hour mark before Town extended their lead to virtually make the points safe. Matt Gardner was quickly on to a miss-placed back-pass only to see Bateman make a great save from his shot but the ball fell to Joe Smith who found the net despite two players back on the line. Webb sent a sweet free kick into the 18 yard box but it missed everyone including the far post by inches. Ryan Edmunds has scored 10 goals this season but the last one was back in January but he made up for a frustrating time in front of goal with an absolute cracking left foot shot from just outside the box that left Bateman stranded on 66 minutes. The fourth goal came on 84 minutes when substitutes Demi Smikle and Joel Grandison combined down the right and captain Joe Halsall met Grandison's cross with a header that found the back of the net. It was nice to see Smikle back after a long lay off and he nearly capped his return with a goal but Bateman saved his left foot effort.
Onward and Upward! Nine league games left with the visit to old enemy Highgate United up next!
