SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Gardner Digs In To Keep Town In Hunt
Coleshill Town remain favourites to finish runners-up to champions Bromsgrove Sporting following their 1-0 win at Coventry Sphinx. But they had to work hard for the points with Matt Gardner scuffing the ball over the line after collecting a Joe Smith cross as the home defence appealed for offside. Sphinx twice hit the woodwork with the Colemen also hitting the crossbar.
MATCH REPORT
Three games to go and just the simple task of three wins and promotion is in the bag but hosts Coventry Sphinx were determined to spoil the plan and were well up for this encounter.
Coleshill were just about at full strength, just Andre Gonzales missing but they welcomed back Jorna Moulton.
Sphinx started the brighter with Sterling having a header cleared, Joe Cole headed out a Faulkner shot out for a corner and Towers headed a Sterling cross into the net but was offside. In reply Ryan Edmunds shot a free kick from 25 yards out just past the post. Sterling cut inside from the left and fired a powerful shot at goal. Town keeper Paul Hathaway made a great save and when his parry came out to Harkin he hit the post. Ryan Edmunds' left foot shot went just past the post and Reece Leek just failed to get a touch to a Joe Smith cross along the 6 yard line. Another Ryan Edmunds free kick came off the home keepers chest but Joe Halsall's follow up header was deflected for a corner. Harkin shot into Paul Hathaway's chest and a Danny Tymon shot was deflected for a corner, from which Gio Dainty headed over the bar. With half time approaching a cross/shot from Faulkner sailed over Hathaway, hit the far post and rolled along the goal line before being cleared.
The action continued in the second half as Exodus Geohaghon headed on a cross to Reece Leek, playing his 50th game of the season, who headed goalward only to see Tregartha tip his effort onto the bar and away. A Rob Evans deep cross scraped the bar and a Reece Leek shot was saved by Tregartha before Coleshill took the lead on 55 minutes. A fine cross-field ball by Gio Dainty found Joe Smith wide right and his cross found Matt Gardner in the six yard box with his back to goal. The in form striker turned well but didn't make good contact with his shot and the ball trickled over the line. A goal is a goal and when it's the 100th league goal of the season and could secure an important three points, it's as good as any this season. Coleshill were on top at this point but a quick breakaway by Faulkner was brought to a halt by fine work from Rob Evans. A Ryan Edmunds corner caused panic in the home goalmouth and a Gio Dainty shot went right along the goal-line. Sphinx came back strongly and a Harkin goalbound shot took a deflection and went just over the bar with keeper Hathaway stranded. From the resulting corner Guest rose highest and powerfully headed goalward and Paul Hathaway made a world class save to deny an equaliser. The home side were building pressure but Coleshill defended solidly and looked dangerous on the break. Matt Gardner had the ball in the net from a Reece Leek cross but was offside. A great run from his own box by Liam Molesworth set up Joe Halsall who then past it on to Joe Smith who shot home but again it was given offside. Joel Grandison got to a through ball before keeper Tregartha but was forced wide but managed to get back in time to save Grandison's shot.
Two games to go and six points would secure promotion but Highgate are waiting in the wings for any slip up.
