MATCH REPORT
League campaign done and dusted, and promotion secured. A cup success would be the icing on the cake for a fabulous season. In the way of a "double" was South Normanton Athletic who were themselves on a high due to avoiding relegation on the last day of the season.
Athletic started the brighter and they looked a much changed side than the one Coleshill beat twice in the league. O'Connell shot only just wide from 25 yards, Joe Cole put in a great challenge to deny Fell when he struck at goal. Coleshill had two shots blocked in the box following a Ryan Edmunds corner but it was all South Normanton at this stage and Town had to work really hard to stay in the game. A Matt Gardner header at the far post went wide and Gio Dainty shot went just after the bar as Coleshill started to find their feet. Town keeper Paul Hathaway made two routine, for him, saved from Fell then a free kick from King before Coleshill took the lead just after the half hour. Reece Leek took a corner short to Ryan Edmunds and his cross was met by a powerful header from captain Joe Halsall. Athletic keeper Hall made a great save but the rebound came back to Halsall who made no mistake at the second attempt. It could have been two minutes later as Reece Leek beat the off-site trap but his shot hit the bar. Normanton responded when Dell's header looped onto the roof of the net and then King shot past Hathaway but Rob Evans was quick enough to get back and clear off the line.
Athletic had the first chance of the half as a King cross was touched onto the post by Tyson before Hathaway dove on the loose ball. Reece Leek chased a long ball by Matt Gardner and pulled a cross back to Ryan Edmunds whose sending shot was saved by Hall and Reece Leek's follow up shot was blocked. South Normanton were still very much in the game but a second from Coleshill would have killed their challenge and that came on 71 minutes. From an Athletic corner and a great delivery, Joe Cole headed clear and Joe Smith led a break-away. Smith sent Ryan Edmunds clear down the right and he left the defender in his wake, progressed along the bye line and crossed for the brushing Joe Halsall who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Normanton were done and with no substitutes, on a red hot day, Coleshill put on fresh legs and dominated the rest of the game. With ten minutes remaining Joe Smith passed across the field to Ryan Edmunds who in turn crossed into the box where Joe Halsall shot for goal. Hall again did really well to save the effort but the ball fell to the feet of substitute Dean Rathbone who found the net from ten yards out. Athletic kept going and Lewis hit the post from just outside the box but Coleshill had the final say with the fourth goal on 84 minutes. A fabulous cornfield ball from Ryan Edmunds found Joe Smith wide right, his first touch put the ball nicely into his path and his second touch was a peach of a cross that Matt Gardner header straight into the net. What a lovely goal. The final action saw substitute Demitrius Smikle into the box but keeper Hall was once again at his best and saved a certain goal.
Three times Coleshill have made it through to the Semi Final of the League Cup but this was to be their first Final, and well deserved it was.
