Saturday 16th August 1980
Midland Combination Division 1
Knowle 3 v 0 Coleshill Town

P1 W0 D0 L1 F0 A3 Pts0 Pos

Team: Terry Sammons, Howes, Casey, Underhill, Terry Allen, Hobbs, Barrie Canning, Les Stonebridge, Tolley, Andrew Canning, Butler. Sub Morrisey.

*Got a picture of Terry Sammons.

Andrew Canning brought Lawrence into action with a first time ground shot following a smart penetration by his brother Barry into the opponents half. Sammons pounced on to a loose ball to prevent Knowle danger resulting from a free kick into the goalmouth. Free kicks were wasted at both ends in turn through faulty partnership but when Speake found the line with an overhead kick but Sammons was ideally positioned to save. Only a brilliant save prevented a fierce drive from Tolley from giving the visitors the lead in the 25th minute, then at the opposite end Donnelly was only inches away when nearly finishing off a smart move between Clarke and Evans.
Half Time: Knowle 0 v 0 Coleshill Town

Coleshill were an unknown force before kick-off with so many new faces on view against their established opponents. Knowle might easily have been trailing, in fact. Only a magnificent save from Lawrence from a Tulley pile-driver and a disallowed goal for offside after the same player had netted from a rebound kept the score sheet blank. Knowle opened the scoring shortly after the interval, Donnelly was the scorer with a shot that went just inside the near upright. Clarke found the net with a shot from the edge of the area after being put into position from a corner kick. Coleshill's resistance wilted at this quick reversal and Knowle dominated the second half. Sammons did well to keep a Clarke shot from entering the far corner of the net but Speake was ideally positioned to stroke home the deflection five minutes from the end.

Coleshill Miss Out

Coleshill's new look side, sporting several young, local players, gave a good account of themselves in the first half, but faded in the second period, enabling a more experienced Knowle team to deservedly take the Midland Combination First Division points. Best scoring effort for Knowle before half time came from Speake whose overhead kick was saved by Sammons and the Coleshill keeper showed fine anticipation in thwarting a combined move between Clarke and Evans. Tolley brought the best out of Lawrence with a cracking drive and at the interval Coleshill were more than holding their own. Coleshill noticeably tired and Donnelly put Knowle in front with a shot that went in via an upright. More pressure by Knowle produced a corner from which Clarke easily made it 2-0 and Coleshill's resistance wilted. Sammons made several smart saves especially cutting out a shot from Clarke, but the ball deflected to the unmarked Speake who calmly put Knowle further in front.
