CHELMSLEY NEWS WROTE
A New Look At Coleshill

It's a new look all round at Coleshill Town. The Midland Football Combination club have a new Chairman, new Secretary, new manager and new players. Tony Doogan, who had been Chairman for six years, stands down in favour of Graham Ford, and taking over secretarial duties is Jack Lawler. Stepping into the managerial hot-seat, in succession to David Kite, is New Zealander Mel Strong. These sweeping changes follow the committee's decision at the end of last season to cut expenditure on the first team squad and attempt to build up the club's finances. In recent years Coleshil'sl hard working committee members, led by Tony Doogan, greatly improved the facilities at Pack Meadow and they now have a successful social club, but the cost of trying to attract more experienced players produced a financial strain and led to the departure of Manager David Kite and most of the players. That Coleshill had their most successful season since joining the Midland Combination, did not alter the fact that the club was losing money. New Chairman Graham Ford said this week: "We made the decision to slash the expenses for a season to enable us to improve our funds." Now, 37 year old Mel Strong, a physical training instructor, has the task of completely re-building the first team squad in readiness for the new season that starts on August 16. Although he was born in Birmingham, Mel Strong lived for 11 years in New Zealand, where he took out nationalisation papers. As a school teacher responsible for physical education, he played regular soccer and secured his coaching badges. Mel will shortly be taking up an appointment at Mirfield School, Kitts Green. The new Coleshill boss is looking for new players and anyone interested in playing for the Midland Combination club can contact him at Pack Meadow on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, or telephone xxxxxxx. The accent is on youth and Coleshill will also be running an Under 18 team and an Under 14 side in the Birmingham Boys League.

Casey Is New Town Skipper

Coleshill Town’s manager Mel Strong is pinning his faith on several local players, as he builds up the playing strength at Pack Meadow – sadly depleted at the end of last season. Brendan Casey, formerly with Sutton Town, has been appointed skipper and Steve Howes, an experienced Midland Combination player, will be assisting the Coleshill boss in recruiting and coaching. In fact, Steve takes charge of Coleshill for the next fortnight, while Mel Strong is at Lilleshall, for a senior coaching course. Tony Sammons will be Coleshill’s keeper and the club will be looking to some of their promising young players to make the grade, including Steve Tolley, David O’Rourke, Ray Woodford, Andrew and Barry Canning, Chris Davies and Bill Poynter. Coleshill still need new players to augment their playing squad and anyone interested in joining the midland Combination First division club is asked to contact Steve Howes on ??????. This Saturday, Coleshill Town are away to knowle and their first home game of the new season is on Tuesday, when they take on newly promoted Hurley Daw Mill. Kick Off 6.30pm.

SPORTS ARGUS WROTE
Andrew Canning brought Lawrence into action with a first time ground shot following a smart penetration by his brother Barry into the opponents half. Sammons pounced on to a loose ball to prevent Knowle danger resulting from a free kick into the goalmouth. Free kicks were wasted at both ends in turn through faulty partnership but when Speake found the line with an overhead kick but Sammons was ideally positioned to save. Only a brilliant save prevented a fierce drive from Tolley from giving the visitors the lead in the 25th minute, then at the opposite end Donnelly was only inches away when nearly finishing off a smart move between Clarke and Evans.
Half Time: Knowle 0 v 0 Coleshill Town

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill were an unknown force before kick-off with so many new faces on view against their established opponents. Knowle might easily have been trailing, in fact. Only a magnificent save from Lawrence from a Tolley pile-driver and a disallowed goal for offside after the same player had netted from a rebound kept the score sheet blank. Knowle opened the scoring shortly after the interval, Donnelly was the scorer with a shot that went just inside the near upright. Clarke found the net with a shot from the edge of the area after being put into position from a corner kick. Coleshill's resistance wilted at this quick reversal and Knowle dominated the second half. Sammons did well to keep a Clarke shot from entering the far corner of the net but Speake was ideally positioned to stroke home the deflection five minutes from the end.

Coleshill Miss Out

Coleshill's new look side, sporting several young, local players, gave a good account of themselves in the first half, but faded in the second period, enabling a more experienced Knowle team to deservedly take the Midland Combination First Division points. Best scoring effort for Knowle before half time came from Speake whose overhead kick was saved by Sammons and the Coleshill keeper showed fine anticipation in thwarting a combined move between Clarke and Evans. Tolley brought the best out of Lawrence with a cracking drive and at the interval Coleshill were more than holding their own. Coleshill noticeably tired and Donnelly put Knowle in front with a shot that went in via an upright. More pressure by Knowle produced a corner from which Clarke easily made it 2-0 and Coleshill's resistance wilted. Sammons made several smart saves especially cutting out a shot from Clarke, but the ball deflected to the unmarked Speake who calmly put Knowle further in front.
