Hemsley Sews It Up For Bridgnorth

Bridgnorth made heavy weather of beating Coleshill. They had sufficient chances in the opening 20 minutes to have sewn up the match but carelessly wasted the opportunities. It was not until the last fifteen minutes that player-manager Cutling Hemsley put his seal on the game to earn both points with two goals. In the first half Vic Francis and Shelley both had good openings for Bridgnorth but were either foiled by goalkeeper Sammons or their own inept finishing. Canning went through on one occasion for Coleshill and was brought crashing down but that penalty appeal was ignored. Bridgnorth were more successful in the 76th minute when Shelley was brought down from behind and Hemsley converted his spot kick. Three minutes later Hemsley finished off some good work by Francis and Shelley for the second goal.

Penalty Sinks Coleshill Hopes

Up against second in the table Bridgnorth last Saturday, Coleshill gave a spirited performance, before conceding two goals in the last 15 minutes. Bottom of the table Coleshill made Bridgnorth struggle for the points, although in the opening stages the homesters looked likely to run away with the game as they subjected Mel Strong's men to heavy pressure. Fortunately, scoring chances were wasted and Coleshill survived the initial onslaught to settle down and even up the exchanges. Sammons excelled with two great saves to thwart efforts from Francis and Shelley and the Coleshill keeper was also to the fore with some smart anticipation and clean handling. Coleshill were denied a penalty when Barrie canning sped through Bridgnorth's defence and was brought crashing down by a lunging tackle, but the referee waved play on. It was ironic that Bridgnorth should eventually take the lead in the 70th minute from the penalty spot. Shelley was brought down from behind and player-manager Colin Hemsley, placed his spot kick wide of the diving Sammons. Three minutes later Hemsley was again on target, finishing off a combined move between Francis and Shelley. This Saturday Coleshill are at home to Smethwick Highfield and next Saturday receive Highgate United.
