Pre-Match Problems Overcome

Coleshill claimed their second away win of the season and picked up valuable Midland Combination Division One points - a great victory when one considers all the pre-match happenings. Steve lamb and Neil Hobbs failed to put in an appearance, because the car they were travelling in broke down and manager Mel Strong was forced to include 38 year old Ray Collingwood at full back and name himself as substitute. Then in the pre-match kick about, goalkeeper Tony Sammons was knocked unconscious when a shot from one of his own team mates hit him on the head. The start was delayed while he recovered. Fortunately Sammons had plenty of time to regain his thoughts as Coleshill rose to the occasion and defended expertly, denying Smethwick a crack at goal in the first twenty minutes and then taking the lead. Mick Cook (Colin Cooke) created the opening, squaring the ball inside for Mark Browning to place a left foot shot into the corner of the net. While Smethwick increased the pace to show plenty of aggression Ricky Allen and Shaun Tymon were outstanding in Coleshill's rear-guard. They continually nipped home attacks in the bud and Coleshill were always in with a chance of increasing the lead. It's back to the Midland Combination Cup marathon for Coleshill this Saturday when they receive Evesham United at Pack Meadow in the third replay of a third round tie, Kick Off 2pm.
