Coleshill Town got the better of Walsall Sportsco in this bottom of the league meeting. Barry Canning got the all important winner.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
In a defence dominated game, Coleshill scrambled their way to another win. There were no goals in the first half with Sportsco's attack failing to make any impression. In the second period, Coleshill began to get on top and the winner came when Canning was on hand to head home.

Coleshill Winning Survival Battle

Coleshill Town are almost certain to be relegated, but there is still plenty of optimism at Packington Lane. Club Chairman George Davies said: "The important thing is that we are still in existence. We could easily have folded up at the start of the season when we had debts of £6,500. Payments were outstanding to several groups with the VAT people putting us under strong pressure. But we took immediate action and the most important decision was to cease paying any money to the players. Obviously we lost our best players including my son, Chris Davies, who went to Sutton and Barry Canning to Boldmere. Our manager found himself in a very awkward position and he has done exceptionally well in the circumstances. The side is still improving and we picked up two good points off Walsall Sportsco." Coleshill, to their credit, cleared their debts including the penalties imposed by VAT. The little Midland Combination club, however, are surviving. Next season they are hoping to take the Castle Vale League side, Meridan Park, under their wing. They have already applied for membership of the Third Division. Plans are now afoot to improve their facilities and Davies said they hope to obtain a substantial grant from the Sports Council. In the light of their effort in clearing their earlier debts they should be rewarded with the loan.

Canning's Goal Lifts Coleshill

The introduction of newcomer Alan Brookes in midfield helped Coleshill Town claim vital Midland Combination First Division points against fellow strugglers Sportsco at Pack Meadow last Saturday. Coleshill proved that they are still determined to try and avoid relegation and on this showing certainly deserve to maintain senior status. Victory could have been more decisive. Midway through the first half the lively Barrie Canning was brought down but from the penalty spot Mark Browning shot weakly at Sportsco's keeper who easily saved. Five minutes later Coleshill had another excellent scoring chance when Martin Colder broke clear of the visitors defence but delayed his shot enabling a defender to kick the ball off the line. Ricky Allen and Shaun Tymon were dominant in the Coleshill rearguard and Sportsco offered little in attack. Their occasional forward moves were continually halted and 23 year old Londoner Alan Brookes engineered some promising Coleshill raids. Coleshill maintained their concentration in the second half and their efforts were rewarded ten minutes from the end when Steve Howes worked the ball down the left for Browning to send over a cross/shot which the keeper turned onto the crossbar. From the rebound Steve Lamb headed the ball across to Canning who applied the finishing touch. This was Coleshill's fourth league win of the season and an encouraging one for the manager Mel Strong who this week said: "We have got to fight like we did against Sportsco in every game. If we do then we can avoid the drop." Coleshill face a tough test this Saturday when they visit Solihull Borough, who in their last outing beat Cradley Town by six clear goals.
