On Form Moors Grab The Glory
Moor Green shrugged off their backroom problems to win a sparkling Midland Combination game at Sherwood Road against highly placed Coleshill Town on Saturday. It was a thrilling Division One clash and had the fans on the edge of their seats as play swung from end to end. Moors were soon pressing forward but were caught in the visitors offside trap. When Coleshill pushed forward they found Hughes in good form and he gave little away at the back. Graham Smith worked hard to get the home attack going and the speed of Whittaker on the wing caused Coleshill plenty of anxious moments. Coleshill nearly caused a shock in the 15th minute when a fierce free kick was too hot for Stokes to hold and the Moors' keeper could only push the ball over for a corner. This livened Moors up and within a minute Whittaker burst through the offside trap but blasted his shot over the bar. Cotton then broke on the right and a superb low cross just eluded the outstretched feet of Smith. Cotton was again in the thick of the action when he first hammered a shot against the crossbar and then had a powerful header blocked on the goal line. It was stirring stuff but Moor Green didn't have it all their own way as Coleshill counter-attacked and a snap shot from Hanson cannoned off the home bar with Stokes well beaten. Moors finished the first half strongly with some imaginative football leading to Smith having a shot on the turn which was charged down in the goal-mouth. Moor Green were beginning to wear down their opponents and Hawkins had tough luck with a cracking 30 yard drive before Cotton headed on for Howell to head just inches wide. Moors had the best chance so far when Howell split the Coleshill defence with a fine through ball but Whittaker, with the goal at his mercy, shot high over the bar in the 65th minute. Whittaker however, made amends 10 minutes later when he hammered home a hard drive after skipper Hawkins had played a fine ball into a crowded goalmouth. Cotton nearly made it 2-0 a minute later but his superb shot was saved by keeper Hollins. But Moors were not to be denied and made the game safe with five minutes remaining. Graham Smith sent a perfectly measured ball into the goalmouth for Cotton to score with a diving header - a perfect climax to a satisfying game that sent the Moors fans home happy.
