Saturday 23rd January 1982
Midland Combination Division One
Coleshill Town 1 v 2 Stratford Town
Coleshill: Kevin Tipton.
Stratford: Ballenger, O'Connell.

P20 W10 D4 L6 F30 A26 Pts24 Pos4/22

Team: Mark Hollins, Steve Pollack, Ron Cartwright, Mark Bishop, Barry Tempest, Bob Dyer, Brad Russell, Gary Jones, Nigel Burrows, Kevin Tipton, Barry Canning. Sub Keith Shrimpton. Confirmed.

Coleshill put on some early pressure and were unlucky when a bad mistake by Braich gave the ball to Burrows who saw his shot go inches wide of the post. A great through ball from Bishop gave Tipton the first goal of the match when he fought off two defenders to score. A good ball from Cartwright saw Burrows shot go past the far post. From a free kick Stratford Town equalised through Ballenger against the run of play. A fierce shot by Jones was pushed over the bar by Spencer. Coleshill continued to pressurise the visitors defence, but could not capitalise on their chances.

The Sports Argus later wrote:
Keith Shrimpton made his debut for Coleshill Town. He had to wait for 65 minutes before he got on the field, but at the same time he saw his side go 2-1 down after Coleshill had taken an early lead. Stratford hit back with goals coming from Ballinger and O'Connell.

Action Again But Coleshill Out Of Touch

In their first game for six weeks Coleshill slumped to a disappointing Midland Combination First Division defeat and the overall performance was a big let-down for manager Colin Holder who said, "Some players did not give one hundred per cent and some were hiding." Coleshill began well enough with Jones and Burrows both going close to scoring, before a fine through ball from sweeper Mark Bishop found Kevin Tipton who weaved his way round two despairing tackles before cracking home a great goal. Another smart move - this time created by Cartwright - paved an opening for Burrows, but he shot wide. Stratford defended in depth and suddenly hit back to level matters. Steve Pollack gave away a free kick just outside the penalty area and while Coleshill's wall was still being finalised Montgomery slipped the ball across the home goal and challenged by Ballinger, Coleshill's Ron Cartwright unluckily deflected the ball into his own net. Coleshill still had enough chances before the interval to have regained the lead but they lacked bite and Stratford easily contained attacks. During the second half Coleshill failed to match the strong running and aggression of the Avonsiders, who deservedly jumped in front with a goal from O'Connell in the 65th minute. Five minutes later Coleshill should have been back on level terms when a splendid pass from Bob Dyer found Tipton, who raced past three defenders and teed the ball up for Nigel Burrows, but from three yards out the ball was ballooned over the crossbar. Stratford's strong defence was not unduly troubled from then on and with Coleshill fading badly the visitors ran out comfortable winners. Coleshill slipped from third to fourth place because of this defeat and manager Colin Holder is demanding a much better effort from his players when they visit Evesham this Saturday.
