Coleshill suffered their first defeat in their new league but it wasn’t for the lack of effort, the Colemen gave their all but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

The visitors scored with just nine minutes on the clock and just as Coleshill were getting on top goalkeeper Paul Hathaway was shown a red card for a high challenge. Rob Evans took over between the sticks. With ten men for two thirds of the game it was tough going but Town weren’t outplayed. They were even on top when Corby scored their second early in the second half. Coleshill battled on but it was not to be their day.

The Colemen can quickly put that result behind them as they are back in action Away to Dunstable on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT
By Craig Hamilton

The first chance fell to Corby when a long free kick from the half way line was only cleared straight to a Corby player who volleyed over from 20 yards. Coleshill then had a penalty appeal denied when the referee deemed a cross had not hit a Corby defender on the arm. Then Coleshill attacked down the right wing as Josh Webb found Reece Leek but his cross flashed across the 6 yard box.

Corby's first real chance came as Kennedy turned past Rob Evans inside the box but Paul Hathaway saved for a corner at his near post. Then on 9 minutes Corby took the lead as a cross from the left was fumbled by Hathaway straight to the feet of Ling who side footed home from 12 yards. 0-1. Joe Smith for Coleshill then had a chance to equalise but somehow his free header went wide from just inside the 6 yard box.

Then on 23 minutes controversy arrived as offside was given against Corbys' Francis but Coleshill goalkeeper Paul Hathaway was given a Red card for a reckless tackle on the player which it seems only the referee saw. Rob Evans took over in goal but this did not deter Coleshill as a long ball by Joe Cole found Reece Leek just inside the penalty area, he turned his defender but shot just wide. That saw the end of the action of the first half which ends 0-1.

Coleshill began straight on the attack at the start of the second half as a cross from the right found Joe Smith but his header hit the post and bounced clear. But on 49 minutes Corby won the ball in midfield and played it up to Carta with his back to goal on the edge of the box. He turned his defender and hit a tremendous shot into the top corner. 0-2.

Coleshill, with 10 men, were from out of the game and started to get a grip on the match. A free kick on the right was cleared straight back to Ryan Edmunds but his cross was headed over by Gio Dainty. On 60 minutes Coleshill made changes as Josh Webb was replaced by George Washbourne and Liam Molesworth replaced by Matt Jackson.

Matt Jackson was straight into the game as his free kick found Reece Leek who layed the ball off to Ryan Edmunds but again his effort hits the post. Joe Cole is then replaced by Joe Halsall. Corby were not out the game and good work down their left by Crawford saw his cross easily caught by stand-in keeper Rob Evans.

Coleshill were playing the better football but could not turn possession into goals as Corby resorted to the long ball to try and turn the Coleshill defence. Neither side could take any further chances and the game ended 0-2.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE TELEGRAPH WROTE

Corby Town maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they picked up a 2-0 victory at Coleshill Town in the Evo-Stik South League Division One Central. The Steelmen had Greg Ling and Jamie Anton back in their starting line-up after they the FA Cup draw with Dunstable Town on Saturday while Joel Carta was awarded a place in the team after an impressive display as a substitute in the same game. The Steelmen opened the scoring on nine minutes when Ling was on hand to tap in after a good ball in from Sam Warburton. And Corby’s cause was given a helping hand when home goalkeeper Paul Hathaway was given a straight red card for a high challenge on Jordan Francis. The lead was doubled in the second half with Carta making it two in two matches as he found the net from the edge of the area. And that was enough to wrap up the Steelmen’s second win of the season.

NEW BOYS ON TARGET FOR STEELMEN

The Steelmen gained their second three point haul of the season on Bank Holiday Monday but made hard work of beating a side who created enough chances to have got something out of the game despite having their goalkeeper sent off in the first half.
Corby took to the field looking Manchester Cityesque in their sky blue shirts and white shorts but did not quite match the standards of the Premier League champions.
Early on Connor Kennedy hit one shot high over the bar and had another blocked by goalkeeper Paul Hathaway. In the ninth minute Sam Warburton fired in a shot which was too hot for Hathaway to hold and Greg Ling, making his first start, reacted quickest to prod the loose ball over the line.
Warburton then almost claimed a second assist as he rolled the ball into the path of Elliot Sandy who would have scored had it not been for a last-ditch tackle by Guy Clarke.
As Coleshill came into the game more they had loud penalty appeals for handball against Gary Mulligan correctly turned down by referee Jacob Lehane as the ball clearly hit the Corby skipper on the thigh. But they should really have equalised shortly after when Ryan Edmunds played the ball into the penalty area and the unmarked Liam Molesworth headed it over the bar from close range.
The home side's task then became a whole lot more difficult when Hathaway lunged at Jordan Francis feet first and brought down the Corby winger. Francis had already been flagged offside but Mr Lehane still produced a red card to send Hathaway back into the dressing room.
With no substitute 'keeper on the bench defender Rob Evans took over the gloves but did not have his prowess between the posts seriously tested as Corby were unable to put the stand-in under any real pressure.
The ten men gave as good as they got for the remainder of the first half and had a good attempt on goal in the final minute. The Colemen then went even closer to an equaliser at the start of the second half when Joe Smith headed against the inside of the post.
In the 49th minute, however, Joel Carta made space for himself on the edge of the box and hit a stunning shot which flew into the net to give Corby a bit of breathing space.
The home side still refused to give in and a cross by Edmunds, who was involved in most of Coleshill's better moves, crossed for Molesworth to once again head off target. Reece Leek then hit a shot goalwards but was denied by an excellent save by Dan George.
Corby were struggling to mount any flowing attacks and when they did get a sight of goal Elliot Sandy went for a shot which Evans saved at his near post when a pass inside to Jordon Crawford might have been a better option.
The final whistle blew with the Steelmen still 2-0 ahead and up to fourth place in the Division One Central table.
