100 Years Ago 1912/13

Saturday 23rd November 1912
Trent Valley League
Wilnecote Trinity 1v 4 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Nichols 2, Harbage, Wright.
Coleshill Chronicle Wrote:-
This match was played at Wilnecote on Saturday last. The Trinity Captain won the toss and set his team to move down hill. Coleshill kicked off and soon made tracks for the homesters goal, several shots were saved by the goalkeeper in good style. During the first 15minutes the Trinity team rarely crossed the half way line and the Coleshill defence had quite an easy time. The game later developed into a rough scramble and several players were cautioned by the referee. Coleshill were not to be denied however and 25minutes from the start Wright put in a grand shot which the Trinity keeper only partly cleared and Nichols dashed in and scored with a fine drive. Coleshill continued to have the best of the game and a few minutes afterwards Harbage scored again. Half time came with Coleshill leading 2-0.
After the interval the Trinity tried hard to reduce the lead. Some exciting play was witnessed and after 15 minutes the homesters scored. Coleshill then played up and Wright getting clean through the defence scored a good goal. A few minutes after the same player missed by inches with a beautiful long shot. Nichols got possession a little later and scored the fourth goal for Coleshill. When the whistle blew Coleshill had gained a victory of four goals to one.
Team; goal, Hinton; backs, P.Neville, Grout; half backs, Freeman, Clare, Clive; forwards, Nichols, Harbage, Wright, Stevens, Williams. Referee Mr Parkes Atherstone.
Coleshill put up a good performance in winning. The score leaves no doubt as to which was the superior team. But for the fiasco in the opening match at Atherstone, Coleshill would now stand well in the league. Kettlebrook Oakfield who visit Coleshill 30th November to play a League match have a good all round team this season and surprised the Kingsbury Colliery when they knocked them out of one of the local cups early in the season. Since then the Colliery have had their revenge. It the matches Coleshill played against the Coliery are any criterion, the “Rabbits” should come out on top in Saturdays game. It will be remembered that Kettlebrook visited Coleshill last year in a Coleshill Charity Cup tie, and made a draw. The replay on the Lamb Inn ground at Kettlebrook ended in an easy win for the home team.
Coleshill have a full programme for the remainder of the year. On Saturday next they visit Amington to play the Rovers the return League match. The following week Coleshill visit Arley in the first round of the Chapel End Cup and should have no difficulty in entering the second round. On December 21st Coleshill visit Kingsbury to play the Reform Club in the first round of the Coleshill Charity Cup and it is not anticipated this match will stop Coleshill from playing in the second round. No definite arrangements have been made for Chrismas matches but the Secretary hopes to be able to arrange attractive games for the holidays.
