THIS WEEK 2012/13 No30

25 Years ago, 1987/88

Saturday 20th Feb 1988
Midland Combination
Coleshill Town 3 v 1 Northfield Town
Scorers: Eddie Sandiford 2, Derek Christopher.
Sunday Mercury Wrote:
Two goals from Eddie Sandiford and one from Derek Chistopher gave Coleshill a resounding victory against Northfield Town to enhance their position in the top half of the table. The home side took the lead in the 20th minute when Christopher neatly rounded Timmins to score from an acute angle. Ten minutes later Coleshill increased their lead when Sandiford supplied the finishing touch to a Mullholland cross. But, in the 40th minute, a mistake by Link enabled Young to score for Northfield with a rasping drive. Coleshill sealed the points in the 65th minute when Sandiford scored from ten yards.

50 Years Ago 1962/63

Saturday 23rd February 1963

A period of seriously bad weather set in. Firstly snow, then frost and finally waterlogged pitches meant a period of 12 weeks past, from the 22nd December, before Coleshill played again.

100 Years Ago 1912/13

Saturday 22nd February 1913
Coleshill Charity Cup Semi Final
Coleshill Town 4 v 1 Wilnecote Trinity
Scorers: Harbage 2, Clive pen, unknown.
Coleshill Chronicle Wrote:
These teams met on the Parkfield Road ground on Saturday 22nd Feb before a good gate. Coleshill had their full team out and Wilnecote were strongly represented. It was about half an hour after the advertised time for kick off when a start was made. Clare lost the toss and Harbage kicked off up hill. The opening play was of a very even nature and each goal was threatened in turn. Wilnecote were the first to gain a point. The ball was worked down on the right wing and after some quick exchanges was placed in the goalmouth where a waiting forward had little difficulty in scoring. This was about 20 minutes from the kick off and Coleshill tried hard to equalise, but the visitors defence was equal to all the attacks and when half time was called the visitors were leading by 1 goal to nil. The interval was only very short and a few minutes after the re-start Coleshill equalised through Harbage and this was followed by a second goal from the same player. When play had been in progress nearly half an hour a regrettable incident occurred. Williams seemed likely to score when he was fouled inside the penalty area and the referee promptly ruled for a penalty kick. Clive took the kick and failed and the referee ordered the kick to be taken again on the grounds that some of the players had crossed the line before the kick was taken. Clive was successful with the second attempt whereupon some feeling was displayed by the visitors and the referee ordered one of the players off the field. He declined to go and there was a scene for some minutes. Eventually he was persuaded to leave however and play was resumed. Coleshill continued to press heavily and when the whistle blew had won by 4 goals to one.
Team: Goal; Hinton, backs: Neville and Grout, half backs; Freeman, Clare and Clive, forwards; Nichols, Wright, Harbage, Finlan and Williams.
Coleshill have not yet done with disappointments and they will have no match next Saturday unless the secretary can arrange a friendly game. Coleshill were drawn against Coventry Catholics in the semi-final of the Leamington Hospital Cup and arrangements were completed for the match to take place at Leamington next Saturday March 1st. On Monday the secretary received a wire to say that the date for the match would have to be altered to the 15th. On March 8th Coleshill play Atherstone Town at Hartshill in the semi-fianl of the Chapel End Cup.
