WE MEET AGAIN – ROCESTER

Rocester are a club with a long and rich history. The first recorded reference to football in Rocester was on Saturday 16th 1876 meaning they supersede Coleshill, who claim to be one of the oldest clubs in the country, by 9 years.

The Romans were founder members of the Midland Alliance and have twice won the league to gain promotion to the Southern League and the Northern Premier respectively. They were relegated back to the Alliance for the 2005/06 season and since then they have finished bottom, 12th, 5th, 20th, 16th, 14th, 6th and last season 13th.

This season “The Romans” currently lie in 16th place with 2 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats from their nine games so far.

They are sponsored by and closely associated with the JCB factory that dominates the town of Rocester.

Rocester and Coleshill had never met before coming together in the Alliance five seasons ago and the ten meetings since have left Coleshill only just with the upper hand. Coleshill enjoyed the best of it when the two sides first met but three wins in a row hauled Rocester back. In 2010/11 they did the double over us without conceding a goal, but last season Coleshill drew at home and won at Rocester. Interestingly, of Coleshill’s 5 wins only one has come at home.

Coleshill deservedly claimed three points from their clash with Rocester on Saturday. They missed a number of chances before they finally took a 30th minute lead through Danny Carter's penalty which had been awarded for a hand ball by Mark Grimley. Rocester responded with Gary Beardsley drilling a shot at home goalkeeper Craig Johnson who gathered the ball at the second attempt. Liam Sowter also smacked a 25 yard free kick narrowly over the bar. Paul Wood then saved well from Carter to keep the Romans just one goal adrift at the interval. Rocester started the second period with more purpose and after Will Chadwick's drive had been blocked on the line a good move down the right between Grimley and Sowter led to Paul Milward equalising with a superb header from a Sowter cross on 61 minutes. Having battled back into the game Rocester were stunned just six minutes later when Coleshill regained the lead when, following a free kick out near the right touchline, Matty Robinson scooped the ball into the net.
