THIS WEEK 2013/14 - 25,50 and 100 YEARS AGO - WEEK 9

1988/89

Saturday 8th October 1988
Midland Combination Premier
Princes End 3 v 0 Coleshill Town
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Two goals from Carr steered Princes End to a comfortable victory which kept them in touch with the leaders. Princes took the lead after 9 minutes when Clark, making his debut, threaded the ball through to Carr, who made no mistake. Coleshill came right back and Bobby Jenkins rattled the crossbar with a great shot. After 20 minutes Princes End should have gone further ahead after Mahir made a fine save from Campbell. A minute later Mahir again saved well from Kettle. A mistake by Oseland in the Princes End goal almost gave Coleshill an equaliser. On half time a scramble in the Coleshill goal mouth saw Carr score again for Princes End. In a scrappy second half three players were booked, John Taylor and John Hall from Coleshill and Roger Taylor, Princes End. Carr should have completed his hat-trick after a nice four man move. Another brilliant save by Mahir denied Princes End another goal then Roach scored for Princes End but was offside. Some good football from Coleshill saw Tony Gormley almost score for Coleshill. In the last minute Harrison confirmed Princes End's superiority and this win keeps them well up the league table.
