Match Report
Coleshill made it through to the quarter final of the Birmingham Senior Cup with a convincing win over Banbury United who are two leagues above them. The saying goes that "you can only play what's in front of you" and Coleshill showed no sympathy to a young, scratch travelling side that took a first half battering, conceding five goals! Simeon Cobourne was the main instigator with a 35 minute hat-trick, the visitors unable to cope with his pace, and Shane Benjamin chipped in with a couple. The second half was much more even as the home side took their foot off the gas and the visitors made a couple of experienced substitutions. Ryan Nash scored with a header from a corner on 72 minutes and Banbury finally got the consolation goal that their second half performance deserved via a Jacob Walcott penalty.

High points were obviously Cobourne's all round display, Benjamin finding his shooting boots again, an impressive debut for reserve team goalkeeper Aaron Thompson, he made some fine saves, and steady debut's for Tyrone Amory and Conal Powell. Young James Williams looked comfortable at centre half and will benefit from the experience but he took a knock and had to be withdrawn at half time.

This is the furthest Coleshill have been in the Senior Cup and it would be nice to get one of the big boys at home in the next round and hope for a big crowd.

Coleshill Town 6 Banbury United 1
By David Shadbolt

An embarrassing night for United as they are dumped out of the Birmingham Senior Cup 6-1 by Midland League side Coleshill Town

Coleshill started the game much the better of the two sides and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 11th minute, Simeon Cobourne being put through on goal and slotting the ball home from the edge of the penalty area past Leigh Bedwell.

Coleshill continued to dominate the game and they made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when some less than impressive defending saw Cobourne score his second.

It got worse for Banbury on 32 minutes when the Banbury defence got opened up again and Shane Benjamin notched the home side’s third. Two minutes later and Cobourne was on target once more for his hat-trick.

The first half rout continued when Benjamin scored his second of the game on 37 minutes to make it 5-0.

The nearest United came to scoring in the first half came in the 40th minute when Declan Hartigan burst through only to see his shot hit the post.

Banbury were better in the second half though of course it was now all over as a contest. Carl Tappin, Declan Hartigan and Aidan Hawtin all went close before Ryan Nash made it 6-0 midway through the half.

Substitute Marcus Green made a difference after coming on and went close in the 76th minute when his shot hit the post and then in the 84th minute he put Jacob Walcott through on goal who was then brought down inside the penalty area for a penalty kick. Walcott got up and converted the spot-kick himself but it was scant consolation on a dismal night for Banbury.

Banbury United: Leigh Bedwell, Callum White (Tom Fishwick 46), Nkosi Mzungwana (Marvin Martin 37), Declan Hartigan, Luke Cray, Jack Westbrook, Aidan Hawtin, Carl Tappin, Leam Howards (Marcus Green 73), Jacob Walcott, Ben Whitehead. Subs (not used): Harry Jervis, Cieran Houston.

Attendance: 41
