SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Town Eyes Are now On Blues Cup Clash
Coleshill Town prepared for the biggest county cup game in their history by strengthening their title challenge. Town entertain Blues on Tuesday night, looking to reach the Birmingham Senior Cup final for the first time, and Paul Casey's side warmed up with a convincing 3-0 win at Dunkirk to remain level on points with leaders Baseford. Shane Benjamin scored Coleshill's opener on 16 minutes and then Deqwon Ebanks converted a far post corner to make it 2-0 at half time. Ricky Cutting's swirling cross-shot made it 3-0 but Dunkirk completed a day to forget when Greg Simmons and Courtney Pitt missed two penalties.
The run continues! Fifteen games unbeaten, five straight league wins with only two goals conceded, 32 points from a possible 36 and two Team Of The Month awards! Fabulous! And yet the team isn't playing that well! There is so much more to come from this talented squad of players!
Bottom of the table Dunkirk, with just four wins all season, made Coleshill look very ordinary and with two missed penalties and an effort off the bar, the result could have been so different!
The strong wind blowing straight down the ground made good football difficult but with the wind at their backs in the first half Town took advantage to go into the break 2-0 up. Shane Benjamin opened the scoring on 12 minutes when a long ball from keeper Chis Jay was challenged by Ricky Cutting and the ball fell nicely for Benjamin to strike home a left foot shot but the home keeper Radford would be disappointed he didn't do better. This was Benjamin's 27th league goal, one short of a club record! Just five minutes later Town were two up when a Tom Weale corner zipped through the six yard box and found Dequwon Ebanks at the far post who shot home for his first Coleshill goal. From this point of superiority, Town should have pushed on but a gritty home side refused to allow the visitors time and space! Ebanks headed wide another Weale corner before James beat Jay to a through ball and looked set to find the net but Luke Edwards saved the day with a great saving clearance. A Will Worthington corner caught on the wind and hit the far post. Willetts headed a corner over the bar when well placed just before the break.
The second half was very disappointing and Coleshill just never got going. They did score a third on 55 minutes but that had a bit of luck about it as Ricky Cutting sent in a cross cum shot from out wide on the right and the ball flew over the keeper and into the net. Jay saved from Coutts and Hastie headed a corner wide before substitute Simmons went down in the box when challenged by Jay, penalty! Simmons took the spot kick but sent the effort wide. Dunkirk were awarded a second penalty for hand ball but the decision looked harsh. Pitt took the kick but he hit the post! Edwards headed off the line a Pitt effort and Jay saved a Hastie shot at the foot of the post. Edwards brought the ball out of defence and fed Benjamin who put the ball on a plate for Simeon Cobourne but the keeper was very brave and saved at Cobourne's feet! Jay was caught out of position after a poor back pass but with the goal at his mercy Hastie hit the bar which summed up the home team's afternoon!
