COLESHILL SURVIVE THE BIG THREE-ZE
Coleshill Town fought hard to overcome the tough conditions in order to rack up their fourth consecutive home win in all competitions by defeating struggling Shifnal Town at Pack Meadow on Tuesday. A win was vital in order to bounce back from another disappointing postponement as Saturday’s fixture against Rocester fell victim to the February freeze.
Despite their recent run of poor form, Shifnal started brightly, putting the hosts under early pressure. It was Coleshill who had the ball in the net first though, Marvin Johnson chipping the ball over Jay Nash in the visitors’ goal, but play had already been stopped for a foul committed by Shifnal.
After being let off the hook, Shifnal continued their attacking spell, Craig Johnson doing well to clutch on to a long range drive from Pete Bromley. The scoreboard was dusted off on the twenty minute mark, Marvin Johnson providing a cross from the right flank which Jon Powis headed down for Chris Gumery at the far post, the striker complying with the easiest goal he will ever score into an empty net from just a couple of yards.
Any momentum Coleshill had built up was in danger of grinding to a halt when scorer Gumery was forced off with a hamstring injury after just a quarter of an hour, but Neil Davis was a perfectly suitable replacement, almost netting his first goal for the club just minutes after coming on, but Nash rushed out of his goal to deny the former Aston Villa man.
Shifnal didn’t let their heads drop, but couldn’t cut out any significant chances for all of their graft, and it would be Coleshill Town who scored the crucial second goal of the contest just before the break. A long ball forward was won by Matty Robinson who read the bounce well despite the icy pitch, and just one touch was needed to loop a sublime effort over Nash, the ball dipping underneath the crossbar to put the Colemen 2-0 up, putting them very much in the comfort zone.
Coleshill continued to push for a third goal at the start of the second half, and couldn’t have been closer when Neil Davis rattled the crossbar from point blank range after Marvin Johnson’s initial shot was blocked. Matty Robinson nearly added to his tally following a slick cross from Johnson, Nash blocked the effort, but almost deflected the ball in off his own body if it wasn’t for a last ditch clearance on the line.
Marvin Johnson would have a hand in Coleshill’s third goal, his shot not enough to beat Nash, but Luke Williams was on hand to slam in the rebounds for his third goal in the last three home matches, a fantastic record for a full back. He really should have added another to his name as he stepped up to take a penalty awarded with 10 minutes remaining, but he uncharacteristically skied the ball over the bar.
This penalty miss would prove to be inconsequential as Coleshill Town made it six games unbeaten, with fifteen goals scored and zero conceded in the last three home games, suggesting that Pack Meadow is becoming quite the fortress as the business end of the season approaches.
Team: Craig Johnson, Chris Charles, Jason Lanns (Leyiso Recci), Luke Edwards, Luke Williams, Jon Powis (Rob Evans), Andy Cameron, Ben Porter, Marvin Johnson, Chris Gumery (Neil Davis), Matty Robinson.
