MARV HELPS TOWN EDGE TIGHT AFFAIR
Two well taken goals from Luke Williams and Marvin Johnson were the difference at Pack Meadow as Coleshill Town edged out a closely fought battle against Kirby Muxloe.
The first quarter of an hour was typical of a game between two teams separated by just one point, as Chris Gumery’s lobbed attempt was the only real effort of note, but the big striker couldn’t quite find the target after being played in by Luke Williams. Matty Robinson would also benefit from Luke Williams’ unselfish play, the left back turned attacking midfielder threading a pass through to Robinson who managed to work goalkeeper Adam Wilcox, but the shot was straight at the ‘keeper.
Kirby weren’t without their chances, as leading scorer for the club Stuart Verrall saw an effort blocked before it could trouble Craig Johnson, but it was to be the hosts who would be rueing missed chances when young full back Steven Hakner headed onto the crossbar from Rob Evans’ corner kick. Just minutes later, Hakner ran through into the Kirby penalty area, but his penetrating run wouldn’t be rewarded with a goal as Wilcox was equal to the driven attempt.
At this point, Kirby were lucky to still be level, but thought they should have been ahead just before the break when they had the ball in the net, but the assistant referee raised his flag, ruling the goal out for offside. The visiting contingent felt aggrieved at this, but were unable to convert this frustration into any type of healthy determination for the remainder of the first half.
Coleshill continued to look for the opening goal of the contest with more urgency than their opponents, and Gumery was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet. Rob Evans produced another pinpoint corner delivery which swung just over the head of Gumery, an opportunity in which any connection would have most likely earned his side a goal.
The turning point of the game came on the hour though, when Matty Robinson was brought down inside the penalty area for a spot kick. Williams, the ever reliable penalty taker, swept the ball into the bottom corner to Wilcox’s left, a carbon copy of the penalty conversion from the last game at Coventry Sphinx. This is the second time this season that Luke Williams has scored penalties in back to back games, but more importantly the goal gave Coleshill a lead to defend.
An edgy final third of the game commenced, as Verrall almost stabbed home after Danny Gibbons had headed the ball across the danger area. There was a sense of injustice when Rob Evans was brought down for what seemed for all the world to be a second penalty, but the referee failed to make the big decision. Coleshill battled on though, with substitute Marvin Johnson and Chris Gumery combining to carve out a great chance for Matty Robinson, but the poacher could only blaze over the bar from close range.
Two more chances to put the result beyond doubt were spurned by the Colemen as Marvin Johnson shot into the side netting before Ben Porter headed over following Recci’s cross from the right.
In a rare attempt to try to restore parity, Verrall shot across goal, only for the flawless Craig Johnson to gather and smother the danger. Substitutes Barry Fitzharris and Stefano Aronandi helped to shore up the midfield with solid displays, preventing Kirby from finding a way back into the game.
Coleshill finally reaped the rewards of a strong all round performance in the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Matty Robinson held up the ball on the left wing, before cutting inside to feed Marvin Johnson in the box. The winger took the ball in his stride before smashing an extraordinary shot past Wilcox at his near post, sealing the three points that Coleshill deserved, standing the team in good stead for the upcoming League Cup Semi-final 2nd leg.
Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Luke Edwards, Steve Hakner (Marvin Johnson), Rob Evans (Barry Fitzharris), Ben Porter, Rob Freeman (Steffano Aronandi), Luke Williams, Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery.
This win takes Coleshill up to ninth in the table, a fantastic achievement considering that manager Carl Adams has completely re-built his side. With seven games to go, a top eight finish is within their grasp and a Cup Final would just cap a memorable second season in the Alliance.
