Coleshill Town boss Casey delighted after landing ex-Rushall striker
Writes the Coleshill Herald
COLESHILL Town have completed the signing of former Rushall Olympic forward Shane Benjamin.
The striker was third top scorer in the Midland Alliance for Highgate United last season and Coleshill boss Paul Casey believes he has secured a massive coup for the club.
"Shane is a goalscorer and, over the years, he's been a winner," said Casey. "You want people with a winning mentality in the dressing room.
"He's 33, with plenty of experience and he's a very good target man.
"He's holds the ball up well and links up play. It's a great signing for us and I think he will be a big asset."
Benjamin scored twice as Coleshill started their pre-season programme with an 8-2 win over Sutton United on Saturday.
Jonathan Jones, Tom Weale, Chris Lloyd, Ryan Nash, Jack Hulin and new signing Matty Gasper also scored.
"It's good to be back out on the pitch, playing football," said Casey.
"We have worked hard during the close season, bringing players in.
"Now it's the time to take stock really and look at where we are at – the areas where we are strong and those where we need to tighten up.
"I'm excited by what we have done over the summer to be honest with you.
"We have lots of competition for places. The lads are going to have to battle for starts and that can only be a good thing.
"Right now, I couldn't tell you what my team will be for the start of the season but what I do know is it will be stronger than the side we had last year."
Last season, Coleshill finished fourth in the Alliance and Casey wants to better that this season – but he knows that won't be easy.
"We want to finish in the top three next season," Casey said.
"That's the goal and it would be an amazing thing for us.
"But it will be hard. We are no longer seen as a bottom six side in this division now.
"Teams will not be so open against us and I think they will make life difficult.
"It will be up to us to make sure we deal with that. We will be working hard over pre-season so that we can get into our stride quickly once the campaign gets started."
Coleshill continue their pre-season programme this weekend.
On Saturday, they will make the journey to Ellis Town and Ibstock United FC who finished third in the East Midlands Counties League.
The Colemen are away to Racing Club Warwick on Tuesday (July 15) and visit FA Vase semi-finalists St Andrews on Saturday (July 19).
On Tuesday, July 22, Coleshill make the trip to Lichfield City.
And finally, on Saturday, July 26, they host Thurnby Nurvana FC, who were East Midlands League champions in a 3pm kick off.
"We have a good pre-season," Casey said. "A lot of these sides had good seasons last year and don't know what it means to lose.
"So they will test us but that's what we want. We want challenges."
