Glorious Town Run Away From Dynamo

Coleshill Town's title push is back on track after they romped to a 5-0 win at Shepshed Dynamo. And with leaders Basford United losing 3-0 at Kirby Muxloe it means Town are now just three points off top spot. Simeon Cobourne was Coleshill's star turn, scoring twice in the opening half-hour before Shane Benjamin added a third just before the break. Dean Rathbone pounced on a poor clearance to make it 4-0 on 69 minutes before substitute Mykel Beckley wrapped up the scoring with a fine solo goal.

After going three months without a defeat then two come along together! Lye Town took away the unbeaten league run last Saturday and then on Tuesday Rocester took the early advantage in the first leg of the League Cup Semi-Final! Coleshill had to get back on track and boy did they do that as they blew away a poor Shepshed side!

Town had the advantage of a very strong wind at their backs in the first half and made it count with a comfortable 3-0 lead by the break. Coleshill made a confident start with a couple of penetrating runs from Ryan Nash down the right. A good run and cross by Smedley saw Chapman flick the ball goalward with the outside of his foot but the effort went well wide and that was about it from the home side as an attacking force! On 13 minutes Craig Milligan won the ball in midfield and sent an inviting ball into the penalty area that Simeon Cobourne ran onto and lashed home 1-0. The home keeper went "walkabout" in a suicidal attempt to reach a Danny Tymon through ball and when he missed Shane Benjamin shot for goal only to see his effort cleared off the line. Luke Edwards hit the side netting from a Dean Rathbone corner, Rathbone had a shot deflected for another corner, Cobourne's flick on nearly found the net all before Town increased the lead on 30 minutes. Benjamin flicked on for the onrushing Tymon who passed inside to the waiting Cobourne who found the net with the outside of his foot. The game was over as a contest three minutes before the break when Nash's perfect cross was met on the half volley at the far post by Benjamin who smashed the ball into the net! His somersault celebration must have seemed OTT but Benjamin knew he had just broken a club record of 37 goals in a season, no wonder he was a happy man!

With the wind against them, Coleshill weren't as effective in the second half but they gave the home team little encouragement to get back into the game and looked just to powerful for the opposition! Steve Towers tested Town keeper Chis Jay for the first time from a free kick that bounced off the stopper chest, fell to Prescott but Jay was there again to block his shot. Yeomans sent a cross/shot just over the bar before Town increased the lead on 69 minutes. Cobourne and Benjamin combined and the latter's through ball found Rathbone who walked the ball into the net. Mykel Beckley replaced Simeon Cobourne and he scored with his first touch as he was sent clear on 81 minutes by Benjamin and the striker confidently slipped the ball under the advancing keeper 5-0.

Coleshill have now matched the wins, 23, and the goals, 94, from last season, their best ever! And with seven league games still to go, lying in second place with 74 points, they should easily beat the 78 points and 4th place of last season's record breaking finish!

With Basford slipping up, the title race is still on but the next big game is on Tuesday as Coleshill try to overcome a single goal deficit in order to reach the League Cup Final!

N.B. Just to clarify the "club scorering record". No one has ever tried to compile the club history until now and with 130 years to cover, it is an endless task! Town were in Minor Leagues for many, many years and to get stats from that period is really difficult however since Coleshill stepped up a level into the Midland Combination in 1967 it is Matty Robinson who holds the record of 28 league goals, 8 cup goals, making a total of 36 goals in a season achieved in 2008/09. Shane Benjamin's goal on Saturday at Shepshed was his 29th league and with 8 cup goals, makes 37 this season making him the new record holder for both League and Total goals in a season! With at least eight games still to go that could be a record that will stand for some time! Well done Shane!
